Hey Guest, Early bird pricing on the Summer Moot (29th July - 10th August) available until April 6th, we'd love you to come. PLEASE CLICK HERE to early bird price and get more information.
Somehow I'd missed cooked Common Hogweed as an edible! Just tried a couple of shoots from a plant that I know definitely isn't the Giant variety (very important!). All I can say is this weed may well change my mind over green vegetables! Excellent flavour and good texture. Assuming they stay...
I'd like to make a mask for an axe I'm about to do a restore job on. I consider myself quite good at leather-craft, but don't have any studs or buckles etc. Can anyone show me a way to secure and release the mask without metalwork please?
Peter
I hope Tony will allow me this one short plug following our time at the Moot...
For all of those who asked me for contact details for the Prehistoric Archery and Atlatl Society (PAAS) at the Moot, all you need can be found here:

Before you get too excited though...
I fancy a try at putting a handle on a blade and I like full tang rather than stick tang. As I'll probably mess it up first time, can anyone recommend a good source of cheap blades for my first go? Money is as rare as rocking-horse do-do, so they need to be cheap.
Scandi ground Woodlore clones...
I'm looking at the excavation report of the Amesbury Archer (some info here: http://www.wessexarch.co.uk/projects/amesbury/archer.html). I've developed a curiosity about some of his kit and have decided that my first ever experiment in making a knife will be to try to replicate (albeit using...
I want to play around with some Otzi style arrows and need a little very thick (read solid) birch bark tar for feather adhesive. I'm not in a position to try to make my own - anybody know of a source please?
Peter
Fancy a new house? Traditional farmhouse in the incredible Dorset countryside. No mod-cons!
This is work-in-progress from Saturday...
Cranborne Ancient Technology Centre, where I'm helping to build this as a volunteer, BTW.
Come and visit us on our Stoneage Weekend - 14 & 15 April.

Just to draw the attention of the bowyers here to the first discussions of a UK bowyers meet for 2012 here:

I hope that posting a reference to another site is permissible here; if not - mods, do your stuff ;-)...
I've heard so much about this fungus, but it doesn't grow hereabouts - all I can find is artist's conk.
Would anyone who lives where they're endemic be willing to harvest one and post it to me? I'll happily PayPal you for your P&P costs.
Also - do they only grow in certain places due to...
A sister thread for my Elder for hand-drill thread.
Been looking around for clematis for the hearth. The only stuff I can find dead-standing is pretty degraded, at least on the outside. Is this what is needed, or would I be better harvesting living wood, cutting it down to heath size and...
Thinking of having a go and hand-drill fire making as my winter challenge. I've read on here about using 2nd year growth Elder shoots for the drill and I've seen the work-experience student at Woodlore use Elder wood to good effect for a hand-drill (very impressive demo - standing start to fire...
As I often see questions and posts about archery on this forum, I thought you might like to know that the Prehistoric Archery and Atlatl Society will be taking part in the Primitive Weapons weekend at the Flag Fen archaeological site near Peterborough this coming weekend (5 & 6 September). We...
Help - an email disaster means that I've lost the instructions for arriving at the moot. I have the driving directions from the link on the front-page of the website, but can somebody please confirm from what time I can arrive? I think it's 13:00.
On a recent business trip to to the US I bought an automatic game camera that takes 4MPixel photos when it detects movement. I've been strapping this to the trees in the wood near my house for a few weeks now and I wondered if you'd like to see some of my results...
A fallow deer, totally...
Looks like I'm going to be in Victoria on the west coast of Canada for a couple of weeks in early summer. I'd love to go and spend a night or two in the woods whilst I'm there, but I know nothing about local rules. Can anybody enlighten me?
Are there wild places to camp?
Are fires allowed...
When I went hunting for that perfect piece of hazel to have my first bash at sapling bow making, a nice ash sapling fell off the tree just as I passed and I couldn't resist
I've split it down and thinned the width towards the ends of the limbs, but I think I've found the problem...
I have a burning desire to make a sapling bow, but need to check out a couple of basic questions.
Once I've harvested my sapling (I intend to use Ash) and have split it, should I lay it up to dry first? If so, should I rough shape it first? Any tips on how to know when it's ready for final...
Winter is coming and I'll be needing to churn out kindling for the new woodburner - as I keep missing the BR/Cegga group buys by a matter if minutes, it's time to go down market and buy that GB SFA. Rather than accept a random one off the shelf, can anyone tell me of a GB stockist in West Hants...
Had a conversation with someone the other day who said he used wash-in permethrin on his trousers to keep the ticks at bay (he was in a very infested area with Lymes disease). Quick searches of the usual outdoor shop web sites haven't shown me any likely products - can anybody give me any clues...
