Its always nice when you pick out a piece of wood to cut into, one which you know is going to be nice due to the features on the outside of the log.... There is generally more going on than you can see...... i expected this to have a pippy burr effect..... but did not expect the colours...

Nicest bit of Yew i have ever seen i think....:)

Corr, I'm salivating like Aaron over sausages looking at that knife. What a beauty it is, as you rightly say that handle is stunning and sets the whole thing off perfectly. Between you and Two Socks showing us stuff today its just bushcraft pornography.
Stunning work as ever sir,
GB.

Yew is lovely stuff. Will look even better with age. You couldn't come up with a pattern like that by machine, just wouldn't look right.
Nice knife as well mate ;)

Very nice indeed.

I did make a yew and bone handle and sheath for a blade I bought (a sgian dubh if that is how you spell it), but with fairly plain grained wood. Came out quite nice, but yew is a bit soft for handles and it is now showing some wear in use.

..excuse the low res images...

Do you generally use harder woods than yew? I think my favourite is amboina burl, which is not only really hard, but smells nice and peppery when being worked.....

Cheers, Bob.

Thanks everyone :) I have more of it... but will save it for some special pieces i think. :)

That looks to be nice work mate.:) I don't find Yew overly soft... its not the hardest going but its suitable. If i want really hard wood, i prefer african blackwood or Ironwood, but yeah, Amboyna is good too.... prefer the smell of Thuya to any of it :)

Cheers Cam.... How's yours done today? :)

Very nicely mate I'm chuffed! It's certainly sliced through some wood and held its edge well! I'm knifed out for a while- my Rob Evans bushtool arrived today as well and it's superb - I've got a beautiful bushy pair now and they're both so good I'm now taking them both everywhere! I'll be doing some reviews shortly :).

Thanks Bill & Cameron :)

Thuya? Hmmmm......tappity tap...pix of hedges and conifers....ooooh yes, now i see! Quoted as a cross between birdseye maple and walnut burr. Wow...but i bet that is Proper Expensive.

I think the reason my yew handle was a bit soft is that is was straight and fairly open grained - i could see that a nice burl type piece would be much tougher, as well as very pretty like your knife Bill. Lovely work.

Exquisite Mark, that's a knife of rare beauty mate :)

Cheers Mac :)

Just.... gorgeous. Not been a big fan of Yew, until now.

Dug out the knife you made me to take to the Moot, maybe I'll even get to use it this year.

Dug it out eh? Thinking back to when you posted a thread about it... i recall there was talk of archaeologists digging that knife up in years to come and debating the origins of it and the guy it was buried with........ didn't think you would have buried it just yet...... :lmao:
