You know if you get a peice of wood and make shavings along the side with a kife...will the shavings take a spark from a firesteel easily?

Or do you usually need tinder?

I've only managed to get a fire lit with a lighter and not tried this method yet.

If you make the curls very small and light, think splinter thin curls, a good mix of those with thicker curls will get a feather stick going, but you need a fair few good quality curls not just a stick with semi split wood attatched.

Although, a clipper lighter will always be my favourite to light a fire...

It's just so much easier.
