Hey Angus,
how did you do that, a link to just one post in a thread? I tried to do the same but it won't work for me.

The link you provided goes to a post of mine wich states 26 episodes but Bob posted a list with 41 episodes (it's post 13 in the linked thread), so I've still got 17 to look out for then...

Tom
Click on the thread number next to the scales. This will be post number 122 click on that. :D

I caught an episode of Tracks at a friend's house but its showing times are
a bit sporadic for asking them (reasonably) to tape them for me. No idea if
BBC, Woodlore or UKTV could make them available in the British Library as
a permanent resource*. They have two of the World of Survival episodes
(Siberia and Namibia) already there which have been recorded from the
television.

*Actually, I could just ask them!

''And I see that 2 of the rerun episodes I taped must have been edited (for instance I am missing the horse chestnut & alder toothbrush bits in my version of the Hygiene episode).''

Galemys - the original 'Tracks' and 'Country Tracks' features by RM were around 10 to 15 minutes long. The majority of repeated features tend to be shorter and therefore have been edited - more's the pity.

Regards

Bob :)

Is anyone planning another letter to the BBC? The recent series has been
very popular so they might see that there's a market for the older stuff.

I've got a letter to send but not sure if I should send it now or wait until Sep
when the new DVD (of Wild Food) is released along with the book.

I wish that 'petition' website thingy wasn't just for the government :D

And while we're at it, we should boycott all Australian products until ABC releases the second series of 'Bushtucker Man' on DVD! :D

[Before anyone starts getting indignant, that was a joke. I like Vegemite...even if it is an inferior Marmite copy]

I've sent another one. I have to admit I did stop sending them after 4 or 5 letters but with the recent series and new interest in Ray I've decided to give it another go.
Lets hope for a better result this time!

Hehe this is actually only my second letter. If I feel I'm flagging I could watch
'The Shawshank Redemption' for inspiration ;)

I included the BARB viewing figures stats (as far as I can tell, episode one
was the most watched programme on BBC2 that week!) and raised a couple
of options other than just DVDing them - we'll see. They might take a while to
read the letter, backed up as it was with all that evidence hehe :D

Where did you send your letter? Mine went to '2Entertain' on Foley Street
which is where the previous 'we've no plans to release the early series'
response came from.

I'll send a copy to Tony as well 'for the files'.

It's just occurred to me that if Ray Mears founded Woodlore in 1983 then
next year will be their 25th anniversary - I wish I'd realised this last week
when writing to the BBC as I could have suggested a box-set re-release
tie-in :)

It would be nice yes, but don't you think old RM and Woodlore have enough of our folding stuff already? Their coffers must be straining under the pressure, or could they fashion another container out of birch bark for some more?

I agree it is worth celebrating, but i'm afraid a re-packaged box set of DVD's i've already got with 3.5 mins of unseen footage with a hefty price tag would be a little excessive.

Why dont they come up with an idea like the 25th anniversary charity where, rather than buy an exclusive item that you can sell on e-bay the following week with a ridiculous mark-up, why not donate to a well drilling project in Dharfur or buy a herd of goats for some needy people in one of Ray's favourite destinations, something like that?

Maybe Ray could follow Jamie Olivers lead and take some Young Offenders or under achievers from and inner city to some Canadian back water and teach them bushcraft and self respect, call it RM's 25 or 'Woodlore's Anniversary Outreach'.

I have a lot of respect and admiration for RM and all the work he has done and i like to think that the principles and values he has would lead him toward something like this.

Just an Idea! ;)

That is a brilliant idea! I was mostly thinking along the lines of a downloadable
PDF called "25 years of Woodlore" which would be a fascinating read, but
your idea's even better.

For the DVDs I meant them to include World of Survival, Tracks and Telemark
which is, to me at any rate, mostly unseen footage as I don't have Sky or cable.
Not just a rehash of those that are available.

It occurred to me that if the BBC are dithering about releasing older material
they might be persuaded if it could be co-opted onto some other newsworthy
event. Bit naive, but worth a try ;)

Hi Jodie,

yep, see what you mean, it would be good to have access to all the unrealeased programmes. I do not subscribe to Satellite tv or cable and always seem to hear about a random repeat after the fact.

It is such a pity that tv stations always seem to be after the 'next big thing' when they have access to all this gold in their archives.

You should start a poll, see if you can get a massive amount of subscribers to vote for or against re releasing old RM programmes on DVD and then forward a link to Woodlore or the BBC. I think their main concern would be wether or not it it economically viable, wether it will sell. If you answer that question for them in the guise of a poll, thats half their work done for them. I'm sure it would be very popular on this site! :D

Silkstone, Blighty!
How about we offer the BBC a trade, release the Ray Mears unreleased programmes and I'll return five of the lost Dr Who episodes I've got propping up my coffee table!!

Did you mean a poll here? Can do - best check with Tony first. Though
people might have got sick of me banging on about 'release the Ray Mears
three' by now  From what I've understood from previous posts
the decision (ownership, presumably) now rests solely with the BBC.

There's a possibility that UKTV History (which is on Freeview) will show
some of the other stuff this year that's previously only been on their non
Freeview channels. Certainly Telemark should be on again (I emailed
them).

Also, I came back to edit my previous post about the charity plan but I'll
write it here. It's still a lovely idea but would probably be a bit of a huge
undertaking, and might not be practicable. Any charity would have to be
registered with the Charity Commission (no idea how long that would
take) and need proper governance (board of trustees, administrators)
and probably be quite a palaver to set up.

p.s. tee hee spamel :D
