I've finally got around to finishing the scales on my Bernie Garland Bushcraft Blade. They're made from a Yew branch that I found on St Herbert's Island, which was part of one of the worst " Bushcraft "shelters that I've ever seen. After spending a couple of years in my shed, I then chopped the branch into chunks and gave it a final dry by the fire for a month or so.
As I haven't got any specialist tools, I put a flapper wheel in my hand-drill and shaped it with that. The handle has been asymmetrically shaped to fit my right hand, as that's what it'll be held in 99.9% of the time.
A quick flick over the waterstone and a stropping later and it's taking the hairs off my forearm like a good'un
It's got green fibre liners, and a touch of boiled linseed oil to bring out the grain.
Cheers, Michael.
