Sewing machine advice for leather

My Missus has agreed to let me us her sewing machine to sew some leather working stuff. It is really thin leather which I am making a bag with. What if any changes do I need to make to her machine?

Leather needles are different to normal needles. I've never had any luck with it, mind!

the leather I am using isn't much thicker than some of the fabrics she uses so thought it might be faster to use a machine rather than by hand.

will look up cost of needles and see if its worth lol.

They're not particularly expensive - widely available on eBay but my local sewing store sells them too

final question.....for now......are they generic needle or do I need to get one specifically for her machine?

Generic - at least most machines should be. My needles are flat on one side and about 2.5mm diameter if that helps

Those are the sort I use in mine for heavy sewing so you should be fine

I am using the standard point needle and they work fine. Just give it a try on some scraps.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but a quick question..... Now I have the needles I foolishly thought they would use the thread I use when hand sewing..... It's too thick for the needle holes..... Doh

What thread should I be using?

In my old singer, I'm using a waxed linen shoe thread with Singer leather needles. Its about the same thickness as button thread. Its the biggest stuff I can get to work with mine. Is the thread seperating or snapping as it passes through the eye?

The thread I have at he moment doesn't even go through the eye of the needle its to thick. I tried to use the same thread I use when I hand sew stuff but think I'll need new thread......

if you put thread through the eye hold thread tight and it slides up n down easy without getting snaged then it will sew in ya machine always use thinner thread in the bottom bobbin

Buy your own one if you want to do more leatherstitching.
