Whats the difference between posting and "chatting"?

all the chat boxes do is make the site look like it has less traffic.

on IRC you can't go "off topic" and have your new thread moved to the correct area and conversations flow more. It's the reason people don't communicate face to face with post-it notes.

Nice to chat about life without the forum constraints. Like asking what you have been up to in the evening etc. Forum's should be contained to the correct subject matter where as chats should be free running.
