I've been making some firesteel handles recently out of some odds and sods I've got lying around. Some are ash, some hazel. The square handled ones are sapele and rosewood. I've varnished the handles for a bit of hardiness.

Any comments welcome.

i just got in from making a handle for a spoon gouge and a bit of axe grinding. i have used some roe antler for the handle, just need to get it glued in. i was very nervous about drilling a straight hole but it turned out good.

looks like you have done a good job and i like your fancy knot work.

What considerations go through your mind as you plan the sizes and shapes of the handles? Not like knife handles at all?

Just size and ease of grip, really. I may try some different shapes to see if they work better. The lanyard seems to make a difference too - it seems to offer different holding options.

this is what i have been messing with to day.

or you could get a knife blade and put your handle on it. maybe something like these but i dont know how good or not they are.

I like the gouge a lot. The handle's very nice. I'm part way through making my first knife, so we'll see what happens.
