Another bow drill problem...help a guy out :)

I think your wood choice is good. Something else may be causing the problem. Here i'm using hazel too. Hope this vid will help you a little bit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkYmxphTIII ATB Matt

    firelighting help please

I you are in pine forest, look for fatwood. It's dead wood impregnated with resin. Smells like turpentine and it burns very well, even in wet conditions. You can find it in dead limbs at the bottom, very close to the trunk. Fatwood scrapings will catch a spark from a ferro rod very easily.

    Horse Hoof Fungus

Punk wood is excellent natural tinder, mostly underestimated. It catches a spark from traditional flint and steel. But you must find the right stuff. Mullein pith (Verbascum thapsus) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIBqzcm0ClY Milkweed ovum (Asclepias syriaca)...

    Bow drill - materials question

My best combo is willow on willow (Salix). Poplar is also good (Populus nigra) for both drill and hearth or in combination with willow.

    Amadou preparation in saltpetre, problem

I have some amadou, waiting for preparation. I also have saltpetre (KNO3) to soak in, but don't know the exact proportion. I don't want to overdo it with kno3, i have heard that it will make it burn like dynamit fuse and I don't want that happen, don't want to destroy the amadou. Know somebody...

    Cattail hand drill

I find that the best base boards for cat tail drill are poplar and willow. Lime is not so good in combination with cat tail, it works but harder, you will rub away your hands like me :( I have been successful on lime, but there are far easier woods (Even though, I find lime best in combination...

    Cattail hand drill

I don't know, maybe isn't too late. Try and you will see. IMHO the best time for harvesting cat tail stalks is august... but i have been harvesting in september last time and those stalks works fine.

    Cattail hand drill

Hi Lennart! I hope this will help You. You don't need to cut the spindle. I'm using 90 - 100 cm spindle and it works fine for me. I like to use all length of the spindle when drilling. That gives me more rotations of the drill between replacing my hands up. I think Your spindle is too thin...

    Cattail hand drill

Well done! You are on good way! Besides, your spindle is from dead standing cat tail or green? Because I found that cutting the cat tail stalk when its green and drying is better. When I have been using stalk from dead cat tail, i have been failing.

    Cattail hand drill

I think approximately 20 sec and I see smoke. First I hear squeaky sound and then comes smooth friction with smoke. When You will hear that squeaky sound, You must increase the downward pressure just a little bit and drill fast. Let us know when You manage to get an ember :) good luck mate!
