A thread on here got me thinking today – I confess in a selfish way. We are a community, sometimes we get a bit shouty, but that’s only because we care about our common interest, but we are a community and unusually in this day and age, we tend to help each other out.

I wondered if there was scope to extend that help for our mutual benefit. We already do it the form of group buys and pass-a-rounds, but could it stretch into other things?

I’m unemployed and have been for 18 months. I admit for the first nine months I was playing out, taking a break from the awful life I had before and it was life changing and great, but the last nine has been about CVs false hopes and rejection. There are 14,000 plus members of this site, let’s say half are employed, that is an inside track to 7,000 employers, 7,000 people who would probably hear about jobs coming up before they were advertised. I just wondered if there was scope for posting situations vacant or CVs or just things non-bushcrafty that we need help with in general.

Naturally my immediate concern is finding work, but collectively we have the power to do things, buy things, change things.

Just a thought.

It's a good thought and networking certainly works. I'd help if I could but unfortunately can't at the moment other than to wish you the very best.

Thank you sir.

But it's not just about me, I'm sure there are people here I could help with the skills I have and that thay could help someone else, and applies to all of us. And our buying power doesn't just apply to bushy stuff. When I was with the MoD we had a "Gardening Club" - cheap seeds, then garden tools, then tools, then washing machines, cars, holidays insurance...

...a small woodland?

Just a thought.

(Gizz a job :) )

I'm a computer programmer, but in old technologies, can't drive and can't really relocate. Made redundant 14 months ago, crap at interviews. HELP!

My profession was destroyed by Thatcher’s government and the digital revolution. After reinvention I was screwed by a crooked business partner. After reinvention, global credit crunch did for me. I can only assume once I find my next direction, we should all expect Klingon invasion!

What did you do originally?

Could be a good idea - with the diversity of the membership and various other networks / forums the members here are part of then there could be real scope for cooperation like help finding work.

Sometimes just a fresh pair of eyes looking at your options is all the help you need.

As for looking for work, I'm a firm believer in working for yourself, starting your own business and reaping all fo the benifits of your hard work instead of taking a paltry wage from an ungrateful boss / company. It's surprisingly easy to do.

Problems are opportunities in disguise ;)

I was an senior photographic officer for the MoD PE (applied and scientific, schlieren, laser schlieren holography, high speed and ultra high speed cine and video of ballistic, explosive and shock trials, aerial mapping, animation, filming, covered air accidents for the Air Accident Investigation branch of the MoT, Lockerbie, Kegworth, stuff... it goes on and on, generally having a ball), then I started and ran a large scale corporate film and conference production company with, I thought, my best mate, latterly I was a project manager for a pharmaceuticals communications agency.

I describe myself as "self-unemployed" - scraping by in a variety of "jobs" and having a great time!

Holy crap, not specialised at all then  Still a huge range of skills you can draw on to do quite alot of stuff out there when things eventually pick up again.

I know, I can and have done all sorts of stuff, I've been trusted by the MDs of blue chip companies to turn their businesses round, but I only have qualifications in things that no one wants in this country anymore. It strikes me the major problem with the jobs market is that HR departments are not alowed to take chances on people or recognise transferable skills and won't let anyone work at a level which is lower than there capabilities - so frustrating!

And after my experiences, I'm loathed to start another business, the last one nearly killed me, certainly wrecked my life for a long time!

Still, it's spring :)

I think it would be good to have a part on the forum for individuals to offer their services - tree surgeons, plant specialists, bushcraft instructors, climbing instructors, smiths etc. etc. - but I don't think a vacancies and CV section would really be in keeping with the nature of the site.

It's a nice idea but I'm not sure it's the right idea for this site.
