Yukon!

Just got back from a great trip to the Yukon (a bit of a holiday and house hunting/job finding trip). Wow! What a place, just miles and miles of beautiful wilderness. Hard to belive, only 32000 people living in an area 4 or 5 times the size of the UK.
Thought i'd share a few photos

The photos really don't do the area justice, but we can't wait to move there. Getting on the plane to come home, we noticed firearms going on board the the RAF own, seems rather a popular destination for hunting then!

Thanks guys. We are in the process of waiting for our visas at the moment but, the Canadian High Commission reckon it's going to be at least another 2 years before they come through (if they pass us!). The idea is to try a get a company over there to sponsor one of us so we can get a temporary work visa. This means we can get out there sooner and the main visa process is sped up. I've been looking at forestry, tree surgery jobs and also carpentry work (as that is what i do).
Property out there is more expensive than, say, BC, but there are some nice places about. The only drawback is that Whitehorse (the capital) is really the ONLY decent sized town in the state (pop 20000). All the other places are so small you'd miss them if blinked, so we need to be near there to have any hope of finding work.
Still, early days yet, i've still got to find work etc.
It is one beautiful area though, and the People (like all Canuks i've met) are really friendly and helpfull.

Wow it looks amazing. When did you put your application in. I'm picking up my visas next week - 3 years to the day since applying! We were initially told 14 months so my patience is now getting a little thin. A cheaper option for housing for us is buying land & having a house built. www.prestigehomes.ca have really impressed us & I've done a lot of research.
Also a ground source heat pump is a nice eco friendly option & while it's a lot more expensive to put in your heating bills are massively reduced plus you get air con in the summer.
Good luck with the wait - it'll be worth it in the end

now i'm really upset,
Where are you off to? We've still got at least another 2 years to go (maybe even more) as we only got our application in this time last year. Thats why i'm trying to find a sponsor for work, so as we can get out there sooner.

Hi,

My Wife was offered a Job in Kamloops, BC last March after a twelve month search. She is a specialist neonatal nurse and they are very much in demand.

I don't want to depress you even more but if you think that the UK government are beurocratic, they've got nothing on the Canadians. I'm told that the High Commission in London is swamped. When we went for our medicals last month we were told by the surgery that they had done as many emigration medicals in the first 4 months of this year as they had done in the previous two years combined, so that gives you some idea of the delays.

we knew it was bad, however, a mate in the know was telling me that the high commission has, after several years of dragging their heals, has finally put their a#se in gear and, what was a 4 year waiting list is rapidly dropping (prob why the surgery was so busy).
