I find that I cary a lot of tinder materials with me - cattail, birchbark and a bit of fatwood are the most common but a copy of Viz was very useful on one occassion.....
Rubber, plastic food wrappings etc have also proved useful at times.

Also if it does start raining as soon as your out, or its been raining and the trees are still wet; organise shelter over your fire starting area, even if it's only a strung up coat, before you start. There's nothing worse than a big fat water droplet in the middle of your nice newly lit fire baby!
