Wax jacket, cut the cotton lining out ( lose the sweatyness and the weight), wear wool underneath.
Works very well for me!
Best.

Let me know how you get on Noddy.
That Filson tincloth looks good stuff, I keep looking on this side of the pond ( ebay and such ) for something to come up in my size!
Take care.
Chris.

Miind you, I wouldn't kick either out of bed.

Best.

The coat is the one on the right as you look at it, Chris.

Bit shorter cut than the jacket, lined in the shoulders too (which the jacket isn't), pockets bigger

As someone who has to make do with a somewhat leaky isotex jacket - shame on you for even considering such a thing! ;)

I'd give me eye teeth for a ventile jacket.

Picked up a Dri-azza- Bone 3/4 lenght Drovers coat last year fantastic quality, great to throw over a wool layer around the fire or in the woods in the rain.
It was this coat that I removed the heavy cotton lining from ( which when wet, had a habit of staying wet! )
It has transform this coat into a truely light(er) weight, super strong camp coat!
Must get me some Tincloth to try tho! Envious!
Best.

Had a thought Rob,
How about trying the wax experiment on one of Carharrts Chore coats?
Nice 12oz Duck, great build quality, similar shape and not expensive on the bay!
Who do you use for Filson, can you reccomend a site?
Best.
Chris.

It was originally heavy tent canvas weight cotton impregnated with the same stuff that painters use to prepare canvas for oil paints.
Then it was commercialised and had 'drying agents' added to the mixture of waxes and assorted stuff. Think old fashioned sou'westers without the shiny surface.

Nowadays it's more likely to be just a slightly heavier weight of our wax jacket fabric, but with almost greenland wax.
Somewhere on line there's Filson's recipe for the stuff.

In our damp climate, it's still cold and chilly 'unless' you wear wool underneath.
Cotton's fine as a lining in a cold dry area, but blooming little use in our Atlantic climate.

cheers,
Toddy
