Just looking for ideas really,

Recently had friends move to lithuania. They've said to come and stay.

Flights are cheap, They're also dull.

Had the idea that i'd like to travel through europe or perhaps via denmark/sweden way.
Thought maybe something like a berth on cargo ship?

Anyone found any interesting ways of travel.

Not necessarily in europe or to lithuania. doesn't have to be mega cheap, just something interesting and different.

any ideas or suggestions or experiences you'd like to share would be great.

Thanks, dan

Times aren't as safe as they were when I was in my late teens, then hitchhiking was the cheapest, best & only way way to travel. I did many a long trip with just a backpack around Europe and the UK. The 'Porte d’Orléans' in Paris was always crammed with people hitching south.

Had some great experiences and never once any dodgy ones...

A mate of mine was even more of a hitching nut he did NewYork to LA and the next year the Trans-Canada.

The problem is these days I'm not sure I'd want my kids hitching around the world. Many countries have made it illegal. I'd guess in the less developed countries it is still possible.

cheers

Friend of mine(school teacher)used to buy 3 old Lada's every winter, keep the best one, strip the other 2 down, put the bits in the remaining one, then drive it to Russia in the summer hols, stay with friends, sell the spares & the car, then fly home.

There is a company that does specialise in cargo ship travel, (cant recall the name) but I dont think its the cheap option anymore...However they claim it is very fun.

volunteer as crew on a small yacht doing the Atlantic crossing, or just general cruising? Used to see adverts for just that in the yachting mags when I was doing a lot of sailing.

I met a young man in the middle of France who had walked there from Lithuania, he was on his way to Spain. I have walked in Poland and Germany and I can promise a very interesting journey if you choose to walk. It might take a while though. :)

Well walking is a possibility, and cheap... but hitching was such fun and you went sooooo much faster...

I actually did Paris to Nantes faster than the train... Ok I got lucky and the guy who stopped was going all the way!!! But I got a steak lunch with wine too, which the train seemingly failed to provide!! LOL!!

That said even today and the dangers and difficulties of our modern world. It is still the cheapest and fastest way to travel.

get yourself a motor bike :)

Can't argue with that!

And remember, you don't need the large "touring' bikes to tour (although they're kinda fun!). Most of the world makes do with 125cc bikes or less - often with the whole family aboard! Keep off the motorways, stick to the back roads, see the country rather than a blur, and save a fortune on fuel.

Yep I did I hitch a lot, but as a former scooter boy, I also rode across France, the UK, & toured Ireland on my 200cc Vespa.. brilliant!! so yes even a small motorcycle can do it...

Just get the plane and take a book, how bored can you get in two or three hours; spend more time with your friends that way.
