Hi folks,

Well it finally happened, i turned 40 on sunday :( however my wonderful lass has booked us on a surprise trip to Sweden :D

Thing is we go next Saturday morning

We are staying approx 25km away form Karlsborg, in holiday cottage at Beateberg next to lake Viken.

Neither of us have been to Sweden before and i'm really excited about going, we are there for a week and and want to make the most of our stay.

To be honest i'm having a job to get my head round the fact that i've only got a few days to prepare

Now, while i'm there i'm planning to get out and about as much as i can and wondered if any of you are familiar with this area and could suggest some possible places to visit or useful information?

Also, while there i plan to buy a Mora or two  . Am i right in thinking that i'm ok to bring them back to the UK as long as they are stored in my hold luggage?

Look forwards to any help you can offer. Sean.

I had a letherman (new) pinched out of my sack at Stanstead 2 years ago. Of course if you kick up a stink you will get the security rhetoric (which is fair enough) but terribly dissapointing to loose a £60 tool.

I must add that although it was in my hold luggage it was only in a side pocket

So, again pack it deep inside your case sack. In between the dirty pants  so they wont want to go rummiging there.

In Karlsborg you have the fortress, with a great museum, at least one outdoor gadget shop and the military store/café/bar place (which might have nice gadgets too).
The fortress is an active military base (Signals and Para) but open to the public.
The Göta kanal (channel passes close by Beateberg.
There are three day survival classes that you can get in Karlsborg.

Tiveden National Park looks great, can't wait to get out and explore the area :D

Just wondered, are there any regulations regarding fishing, would i need a permit if i wanted to catch myself some dinner?

Tack sa mycket

If you are going fishing in Tiveden you need fishing permit, but that you can buy about everywhere in the area. Some lakes have catch and release or a X fish per person limit.
You can try the smoked fish, its great.
If you happen to have the need to ask a person anything, dont worry. Swedish people do speak english from OK to very good.

The knife laws in sweden are very reasonable. If you wear normal clothes and look proper you can carry anything that is "normal". There are no rules on locking folders and stuff.
Leave your ceremonial Klingon sword at home, it is of no use in Tiveden anyway.
Just dont go "Kanalhotellet", get drunk and wave about your knife, then the cops will take you :(.

There are lots of things to do and see in the area, depending on your interests.
Huge armour museum: http://www.pansarmuseet.se/
Fancy castle: http://www.lackoslott.se/
Amusement park for the kids: http://www.sommarland.se/
and other cool places to see. Ask the local tourist agency (mostly cute girls about 18 :))

There are also boat trips on Göta Kanal www.gotakanal.se
Nice and soothing.

I was born in Lidköping.
My uncle flew A32 Lansen at F6 AFB in Karlsborg way back before we had colour TV :).
I did part of my National Service at F6 too (the rest I did at F7) and I just happened to know abit about the area :) My parents have a summer cottage between Läckö and Lidköping and so on.

Hurry up and visit the armour museum, they are moving it in 2008 to somewhere not yet decided place.

Another thing. If you want to wander around in the forest that is not national park the Allemansrätten do apply with totally different (lighter) rules than those in the parks.

And one more important thing. There is fire hazard 5E unless the rain comes and no-no on open fires. Trangia/propane/gas is still OK. The tourist agency can inform you as well.

Will have to post some pictures when we get back.

Many thanks. Sean
