This one's gonna seem a bit odd but bare with me, I'll go right into detail because it's the only way I can expect an accurate answer:

I'm a little concerned about my dad, he's had a "chesty" cough since the start of december, he's not coughing anything up it's dry - it's just the persistance that's bothering me. He's been to the doc's but from what I can make out he played it down (as usual) and therefore it was put down to a cold. (he's 62 and otherwise doing well for his age).

The cough first came about when he was cutting bricks with a diamond disc, or at least that's when it seemed to start, he'd also been spending a lot of time out in minus 1,2,3and4 celcius (including after he first got ill) tough as old boots these old guys but not much sense! I think he's also been needing to "point percy" more often though that may be to do with drinking more because of the cough.

Anyway, he eventually got some antibiotics from the doc and had some tests done (I'm afraid I don't know the outcome) but that was the end of it and he's still coughing and generaly looking ill.

I've started to wonder though whether it may be to do with our three ferrets; along the lines of farmer's lung, bird fancier's lung or even pneumonia caused by cleaning them out.

We've got two large hobs and a jill who live in a "hutch" that's as tall as me, has four floors and is about 2.5mtrs wide - and about 5 toilets the messy critters!! So, you can imagine, there's a fair ammount of sawdust etc involved and a large ammount of "muck" which I've read is pretty nasty stuff (corrosive). Anyone ever heard of ferret lovers getting chest problems? Or better still, knowlegable enough to recognise these symptoms?

We used to keep anything up to 80 ferrets at a time and neither of us ever experienced anything like that and I don't remember any of our ferret keeper friends mentioning it either.
I'm no medical expert so wouldnt want to comment on his symptoms, but my hubby has had a dry chesty cough for over a month now following a cold. I know there have been some pretty horrible bugs out there this winter. If your dad finds that his throat is getting sore with all the coughing you cant beat a good teaspoon of honey.
Hope he feels better soon and that the test results arent too long in coming.

Never heard of that buddy, ive had ferrets about 25 years, although it may be the sawdust, the urine and excretement is just typical carnivore stuff, if not kept clean it will turn to ammonia and stink, mine are cleaned out of the scats 3 times a week and have a good clean and scrub out every 2 weeks and there in a huge 3 tear cage i had built, may be some particle or dust masks may help when cleaning them out? but as I said ive not heard of anyone with chest complaints through ferrets bud.

Obviously, I can't say for certain that's what your dad's problem is but apparently, pine shaving/sawdust 'can severely affect the respiratory system of both animals and humans alike' .

My daughter was doing a 2 years BTEC course on animal management a while back and that was they were told. It can affect other small animals, guinea pigs, hamsters, etc. Different people are affected differently, so it could be that he is sensitive to the dust.

I think you may need to encourage your dad to go back to see his doctor, particularly if he still coughs and looks ill after the antibiotic treatment.

:D  Speaking as a tough as old boot guy, with not much sense :p nearly as old as your dad ;) , don't be too hard on the poor bloke ;) . I went from being someone who didn't even know his doctor to almost having to have a season ticket in 2/3 shorts years. I hate it!

I hope he gets well soon.

I'm suffering at the moment, with coughing and dry mouth but haven't been anywhere near ferrets, or any other mammals for that matter.

Sipping water only gives minutes relief from dry mouth, but have discovered eating an orange/mandarin does fire up the saliva glands long enough to get some sleep.

does he use woodshavings or sawdust?
If its sawdust switch to shavings it doesnt leave the air floating with fine particles.

I'm sitting here reading this coughing away like crazy which I have been doing since Christmas day, and I'm not exactly in my sixty's :) . Your dad may well just have something similar. Although my cough was much wers after cleaning out my chicken house but then pretty much anything dusty or smoky seems to aggravate it. I would suggest some kind of face mask while doing anything dusty would be a good idea.

But as has been said keep an eye on things and keep pushing the doctors, better safe than sorry.

Good luck, and I hope your dad feels better soon

Thankyou all very much. It's wood shavings rather than dust but there's obviously dust in them, and they do smell faintly of pine.

Anyway, all seems like good advise. I'll see if I can get him to go back to the doc, even better if my mum can go with him to make sure the doc gets the whole picture.

Thanks again.

Your Dad has probably got one of the "nasties" that are going about. Not likely to be the ferrets.

If it doesn't go away soon, try to get him back to the GP. If you don't go back, the GP thinks that everything is OK again. What he/she thought the last time could well have changed after more time has passed.

Us old farts do need pushing to get us to go to the doctor.:p

I'd keep pushing the GP to investigate or refer for specialist (chest). A lot of people don't ask their medics why they (the gp) are not worried about the symptoms they are experiencing or ask for explainations for treatments.
Anyway, I hope he starts to improve..
