I've just treated myself to a pair of Merrell Walking/Trail shoes and whilst on I got some new socks because they were cheap (I just can't be one of these people who spend £15 on one pair of socks)

Anyway, previously I would just wear cotton sport socks with a pair of synthetic walking socks over the top, no realy problems but I would get hot spots walking on the road.
The two pairs of walking socks I have just bought are

Obviously I still have a drawer full of synthetic cheapies. With that in mind what would people recommned for general walking, one pair, two pairs, what combination, which ones on first?

I'm not going to be walking hundred of miles a day but would just like to be comfy when walking and also when kicking about camp

Let me know whats worked for you

Try wearing a thin, synthetic and highly wicking liner sock. SOmthing like this: -

Or

http://www.bridgedale.com/Products/Product.asp?ProductID=17

I have two of the second ones but they are pricey.

I think the first one of your sock links is in coolmax which is better at helping you keep your feet cool and sweat free Whilst the second of your links is for something that looks better for cooler conditions. I would personally wear a thin liner sock under them (synthetic and wicking of course). This is so the inner sticks to your feet and the outer sticks to your footwear and the friction is between your socks not you and your socks. Well thats kind of oversimplified but for years it worked for me. I can now get by with one layer because I do so much walking over the recent years in particular that my feet are bottom tough as anything and is more likely to wear my shoes and socks out than the other way around!!

Not a bad buy I think those socks. Just please don't wear cotton socks when walking. They absorb moisture and keep it against your skin which is part of the reason you might get blister or hot spots. Always best to transfer moisture such as sweat away from your skin. SO much more comfortable for you.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice, Would it ever be okay in warm weather to simply wear the Coolmax socks by themselves or is it always better to have a baselayer with them?

Trespass had a deal on some very good 85% merino wool trecking socks - I got 2 pairs for £16. Worth a look at your local outlet.
