Never reall been a heavy drinker. I know my limits and tend to stick well within them even on a proper night out.

I'll gladly partake in a few drinks at meets and such but I never get drunk.

this is not a thread that the big labowski will be reading lol as for me i like a drink around the fire 2 tins max as someone else said to much hassle if your in a hammock regards dave

Strangely... :)

I do enjoy a small tipple from time to time. Give me a tree (or three), a campfire and a bottle of port and life is complete. I do the odd sober session,
but I've always enjoyed lighting campfires and cooking, booze and banter, which is handy- or we would be sitting in the dark, cold and hungry LoL

Oddly, in two years of hammocking, I don't think I've ever had to get up in the small hours to stretch the legs.

I don't mind a drink when i'm out, I don't over do it, It's nice to sit round the camp fire with a few beers and relax.

Yep. They say that about alot of things that are ok if you can control them. Try looking in alcohol and drugs programme and thay all started with one drink, and I can handle it! I have, its not a joke for those that live through it or a pretty sight. Go for a walk through the streets of our towns and cities on a Friday or Saturday night! Proud to be the father of those young people throwing up! Or being abussed due to there incapable state? Hmmm I can handle it, Ive only had one, ill drive!

Oh dear you've definately got a downer on alcohol!

I walk through my town quite often of a night during the weekend, it's a seaside town and all I normally see are people having a good laugh and a great time, of course you get the muppets on a weekend binge or stag weekender, can tell them a mile off, and we get the tourists who really go overboard as they're on their 'hols' but mostly, just people having fun. Don't see your problem with it, damn glad it's highly unlikely we'll ever go camping together though, just can't do the doom n gloom when I'm having a laugh. ;) LOL

Funny how the only person who who admits to drinking daily is the one showing any 'attitude' :p

I'm not entering into a debate about friends who also do so, both the drinking and the beligerant and defensive ripostes, but it would be much appreciated if this thread was kept peaceable.

cheers,
Toddy

I'm approaching 50 fast and never drank as much as when I'm round a campfire with the midlands meeters, sampling every concoction that passes under my nose... just for product evaluation purposes of course!

My father is a big cantankerous drinker and one of my exes was a binger and a fighting drunk... when the eyes went in opposite directions, it was time to hide. He'd smash up the room but was pretty easy to avoid. It happened once too often and he caught me while in the kitchen washing up so I persuaded him to release me using my rolling pin. I love happy drunks though :)

Facetiousness doesn't really suit you UrbanX :sigh: I presume you haven't had your evening repast then?

Toddy

Sorry Sal; cross posted.
I do mind a quaich passing round at light speed at the moot, and coming to the conclusion that I don't carehow expensive some Malts are, they're not good.

Oh, and a rolling pin strikes me as a good response :)
Happy drunks, occasional ones that is, can be fun :)

your house!
I don't drink with people I don't trust or like, it just amplifies their traits, I am having a glass of rum right now, but i am at home, though i am wearing a feather boa, is that camp?

I had to google 'Fasctiousness'.... fa·ce·tious (f -s sh s). adj. Playfully jocular; humorous: [French facétieux, from facétie, jest, from Latin fac tia, from fac tus, witty.]

I agree, Tengu, some areas rely on their pubs- you have a devil of a job round here to take a pub and change its useage- you have to prove that its been empty so long it can't be resurrected as a community resource. It'd be good if we didn't want one to sell 4x4s from :)

I think the biggest difference is really that those who enjoy a drink and actually enjoy it, are one thing, but those who 'need' a drink, are another entirely.

I work with people who definitely fall / fell, into the latter camp and it's not funny, it's not comfortable to be around them. Drunken midnight phone calls, drunken rages and aggressive 'socialising', are not relaxing.

It'd be excellent if in our culture people who got drunk became calmer, sleepier, peaceable; unfortunately the opposite is more often the reality.

Of all the meets I've been at, only one had a problem with drink taken to extremes. It's been dealt with and is more than unlikely to happen again.

However, outside of bushcraft meets, I have been at a camp where a drunk threw his girlfriend into the fire after she spilled his glass, another where an idiot opened up his thigh with a knife when carving, one where a fight broke out and two men rolled into the fire, another where a persistant letch let the drink be his excuse for invading the tent of a young lady who had no intention of spending any time with him.....though that's even handed, I know of one female who really should be arrested for groping when she's too many sheets to the wind

Fun's fun, but the hell with nonsense.

LOL. Reminds me of one of Bill Coaby's monolougues. He was talking about cocine users and said he asked one once, "Why do you do cocaine?" and the user replied, "Well because it amplifies your personality!" Bill responded, "But what if you're an a$$hole?"

If I was at a camp with more than close friends, I would still probably have a bottle of whisky on me. The difference being that it is not shared with 2/3 people, but with a whole group. Meaning a dram each. It is all about the situation IF you drink and drink sensibly. I am happy to get rip roaring drunk, hell I love too :) But it has to be close company. I could probably go a bottle of port each and more with the big lebowsky ;-)

I drink and I love it - but it is all about the occasion. IF I went to a bushmoot/meet or whatever they were called I would not sit there and tan a bottle of anything and create an atmosphere for anyone else. (nor play with sharps whilst drunk, being sick over your tent and pulling up all your guylines whilst chasing goats into the camp)

IF there are NON drinkers around, then consideration needs to be had also.

This thread seems to be taking on all aspects of alcohol, from alcoholism into the politics of young people going out and getting sloshed ( which 90% of us did at one point) and on to camp etiquette, at the end of the day though (bout 4am) it is all about enjoyment. I like to go for 30-40 mile short hikes, drink whisky, fish, camp, collect sap, cook good food, cut myself with knifes and drink some more before falling into a merry sleep.

Everyone to their own but with consideration to others.

Agree with everything you said there NetFrog.

Would be nice to be able to have a glass of wine with dinner without having to 'admit to drinking daily' like some alcoholic (even though a very large percentage of Europeans also like a glass of wine with their dinner), and being accused of having 'attitude' toward someone who has obviously got a very real problem with people who drink alcohol, but hey.
