Hi all,

Apologies if this is a mortifyingly stupid question, but I've been getting into leather sewing recently and having bought a Tandy basics kit, wanted clarity on the different types of awls available.

In my kit was included a stitching awl - I've been using this to do some simple bookbinding (which has turned out really well!), but am now looking to start making wallets, pouches etc. Would you suggest I look at investing in a sewing awl?

Can I ask for some examples where a stitching awl would be used over a sewing awl and vice versa?

Thank you all for any help!

Pete

I thought the stitching awl was usually diamond-shaped, so it actually cut the leather (which closes up after inserting thread), where as a sewing awl is for working through fabric, where you want to separate the fibres without cutting them.
