Around here Willow grows in the hedges... and I just harvest long wands for my Melon basket frames...no need to replace it :)

Don't know of any books but I remember a long long time ago as a kid we used to sit for hours in the woods using twisted grass and straw to weave baskets. We used to collect new growth Elder branches when still very green, form them around a growing tree trunk and tie them at the back to basically form hoops, these were then just left to dry for the summer and come this time of year we would cut the cords and have nicely shaped 'hoops/circles' to do all kinds of things with, basket frames was one of those things....conveniently, different size tree trunks gave different size hoops/circles.
