Hi

When does the reception closed? I'm thinking of coming up on Friday, but won't be arriving till about 8-9pm. Will there still be sober coherent people on the desk?

Tim,
If the reception area is closed just ensure that you tell someone (Mods, Admin etc) that you are "on site" so that the correct tick can be placed in the right box and your welcome information can be passed on.

Just ask around!
If the person you ask doesn't know where the Mods camp is or where people are gathering, they should have a map in their welcome pack so you can see where things are!

It is likely to be a very friendly event, so don't be affraid of approaching someone just because you don't recognise a face - within minutes you'll be putting names to faces. We've all been in your situation and we all know how quickly friendships were formed and minds put at ease!

Maddave posted a map of the site, have a look at that to get some idea of your bearings.

Lots of friendly folks around. Just ask and they'll point you in the right direction.

Reception's next to the loo block so it's not likely that you'll be left to stew :)

cheers,
Toddy

Hi Toddy - I've just managed to look at the map today - unfortunately it's blocked at work and I always forget when I'm at home. Due to an acute lack of power in the office, I'm working from home today hence finally viewing the map!

Do you know if we can camp anywhere there, I notice there's 'naughty corner' etc but no defined camping areas - also whats the 'main chute'?

You can camp just about anywhere you like.

If you want noisey party pitch close to the naughty corner. If you want peace & quiet pitch the opposite end of the wood to the naughty corner :rolleyes)

The main chute is where the morning briefing is held, various classes during the day and social evening gatherings round the fire :)

Yes, you may camp anywhere, but please leave pathways and the Mods area clear.
Naughty Corner is where folks keep the party going late on, if you camp near there no one will apologise for any disturbance. The lay of the land means that the noise from that area doesn't travel through the rest of the site, so elsewhere folks are asked to be considerate of their neighbours as the evening wears on. You can camp anywhere and just take your socialising to the Naughty Corner though

The main chute is a huge chute over the top of part of the fort just over a bit from the reception area.
It's here that Tony holds the morning meeting, where some of the workshops will be, and the hangi is cooked and served in that area too.
There's a huge firepit there and folks gather to brew up, have a blether, just chill out, around it.

cheers,
Toddy

Hangi is where you run a fire in a hole full of stones then you bury your food in it to cook.

The toilets do have running water, so do the showers. Bringing your own roll is always a good idea.

Think "Campsite" with no caravans and overgrown with trees and you'll get the general idea.

Thanks Wanderer - I visit scout sites and farmers fields and ever so occasionally the odd 'commercial' campsite. All of them are worlds apart - I've had a farmers field with a single perfectly good running water loo (In the middle of nowhere), I've had scout sites with wooden box over a pit and I've had commercial sites where the doors have been locked on the 'good' toilets and replacement plastic loos as a temporary stop gap. I've even had a mountain pass where you could camp, but weren't allowed to use the public toilets 50yds away because they were for the motorists and you had to use the ones 150yds away which were absolutely identical and because the road ran past it, the motorists used those too...

whats hangi?

Hangi is where you run a fire in a hole full of stones then you bury your food in it to cook.

The Hangi generally takes a whole day to cook - morning to get the fire pit hot enough and for the burchery demonstration. The afternoon is spent wandering past the pit, smelling the air and licking your lips. Then the lot is dug back out and served - though it is offered as a taster only so don't expect to be fed a full meal, it has to go around lots and lots of people.
