There are many kinds of parang (Malay word for machete) but my favourite style comes from the Karo highlands of North Sumatra. I've been through a few over the years, but here is a slightly blurry photo of my current camp knife (£4) and pocket knife (£2). The parang is made from a truck spring. I've no idea what kind of steel is used in the small knife, but it's a good job it was sharp when I bought it because its hardness is off the scale.
