Hi i want to learn the friction fire lighting method of running a cord across a pice of wood.

i have pictures and i understand the principal i just need to know which materials to use.

in the shed as a baseboard i have:
Lime, Poplar, Hazel, and clematis all ready to use.

the book suggests using "Rattan" an asian vine, i need a substitute.

i was thinking a thin strip of leather like a bootlace, i asked on my local market and he had 2 types of round leather cord
one stiff(i initially thought was plastic coated electric cable)
one supple seemed soft,
both were about 5mm but was selling it 1 yard for £6.50 which i thought was a bit steep!

what are peoples views on using a strip of old leather belt?

or is ther another easily found natrual cord like hemp rope?

i would value any ideas! :)

Why not use rattan -basketry cane, the biggest problem maybe getting the right thickness for the purpose. But you could always use several pieces together.
