I'm pretty lucky my best mate is a wicked guitar player and i attempt to sing (when suitably lubricated!) and have had some very posative reviews although i think they are being polite lol. every now and again we get together for a BBQ and a folk/classic rock Jam and its AWESOME!!!!!

Funny you should mention that, it's on the list of instruments I want to learn... Nothing quite like a little burst of Duelling Banjos to put the wind up the paddlers. ;)

i've yet to get to a point where i've convinced myself that it was a good idea to take my acoustic guitar.. i always consider it, but the moisture and the elements (not to mention the added weight and awkwardness) always makes me chnge my mind..

i have taken a strum stick on occasion though.. cant play it well though

It would seem to me that the best weapon.... i mean instrument would be a harmonica. Its light very portable and always reminds me of a campfire when i hear one

I remember a time, in Kings Canyon National Park (USA), when some girl guides not far away would not stop singing - until they fell asleep. But they had a good reason. We were visited by bears in the night. A bit of a sing-song, or just straight shouting, to be honest, tends to put them off.

Of course if you go for the ear-plugs approach then you probably won't hear them snuffling around the camp anyway.

I have taken a recorder but to be honest it's too loud! The sound seems to bounce around off of trees and doesn't half carry. I've had the same thing happen with my ocarinas.

Makes me feel a bit too much like a noise polluter - disturbing wildlife and so on. I need a quieter instrument!

Musicmaker's Kits (http:///www.harpkit.com) are a good source for anyone who fancies having a go at making musical instruments. They do both kits and sell the plans and hardware for scratch builders.

This http://www.harpkit.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=btrek or this kit http://www.harpkit.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=MK&Category_Code=strumbly are good for those looking for a lightweight and portable guitar. Or how about one of these http://www.harpkit.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=cardboard?

Happy strumming!:headbang:
