So today i have made a start on my underquilt.
I got the design planned out, nothing too special as its my first attempt and dont want to try the intricacies of curved baffles etc yet.
I am having 4" baffles at the top and 2" at the foot end to save some unnecessary weight.
So far i have measured and cut the baffles, now just making the steps in them ready for sewing.

Next up is cutting the inner and outer fabrics.......watch this space.

Managed to get the inner layer cut to size last night.
I have sewn a 1/4" seem around the outer and marked up the baffles.
Also sewn the darts on the inner to curve the fabric.
Then i got tired and forgot what piece i was working on, i managed to sew 2 of the baffles on the wrong side before i noticed.......called it a night after that.
Will make it interesting when it comes to sew the other baffles on the bottom layer...!!!

This morning i had a little help with the measuring and cutting of the Multicam Epsilon outer layer.

Now i have the outer layer cut to size and the taper cut for the change in baffle size.
Will be sewing the seems later and marking ready for the baffles to be sewn on tonight hopefully.

Finally finished it.
Made a good few mistakes along the way and learned a few lessons too.
But apart from some dodgy squint seams and a few small repairs it doesnt look half bad.
It weight 930g in its stuff sack which 500g lighter, and so far without sinching it down is about the same size as the Snugpak UQ.
So im happy. More warmth for less weight and it will pack smaller.
Cant wait to get out to WRW meet this weekend and try it out.

Judging from the pictures you've gone about that very methodically, I tried an underquilt but it didn't turn out too well, however I was using materials I already had so didn't lose anything but did learn quite a lot. It's always nice to have a hand - I see you've drafted someone in to help mislay all the pieces, draw over your plans and cut miscellaneous shapes out of your fabric:)

Pretty impressed by that. What is the overall size? and how heavy will it be once complete?

Yeah, she tries to help but just gets in the way as most toddlers do.
Its going to be 44" wide by 78" long with 5"x4" baffles at the head end and 5"x2" baffles at the foot end.
I have been working on the design for weeks, making sure i had it all planned out step by step so no mistakes can be made as the Multicam is very expensive and imported from the US.

Had a long arduous day on the thread injector.
Had to remove the 2 baffles i accidentally sewn to the top layer stitch by stitch so i didnt rip holes in the netting.
Took nearly 2 hours!!!
Got them stitched on the bottom layer but had to cut and add a bit to make them line up with the baffle size change.
Then spent a long frustrating time trying to make the ends of the baffles sew to the side pieces to square it all out.
And after all that i managed to nick the bottom layer with the scissors, only a 2mm hole but had to sew it up.
Now the bottom layer is complete, the top layer has the baffles runs marked out and all is ready for sewing the 2 pieces together tomorrow.

Im off to bed......

Looks like you'll have to make another one for yourself...

have you sewn in channels along the edges to run cord through to cinch it up and hang it? it's difficult to tell from the photos.

Looks good. How did you get the down into the tubes?

Once i had weighed it,i just scrunched it into my hand and shoved it in.
It was done in a very clean dry bathroom with the hoover next to me so any spillage or escapees would be hoovered up after the weighing was finished and put into the quilt.
No wastage and didnt have to worry too much about mess.
It was no where near as messy as i though it would be.

Tried it out at the weekend and it was around 2c that night.
My back was lovely and warm and it worked perfectly.
Now i need a TQ because the temp difference between my chest and back was so bad it kept me awake.
