That's a real shame, I hope they manage to contain it as there's some lovely pines and yews on the loch

West Devon, Edge of Dartymoor!
Spores that spread the disease can be transmitted in contaminated soil, as well as on pruning equipment and other tools.
Mainly found in Canada/USA ... then turns up at Loch Lomond..

I wonder if someone accidentally brought it back after a bushy holiday?

I have to admit that I'd never thought of 'disinfecting' my kit after an overseas trip before... something to consider for future trips perhaps?

Footwear and car tyres should be thoroughly cleaned after a trip into any woodland. There is a theory that Phytophthora ramorum is being spread by innocent tourists and visitors spreading the spores as it seems to be spreading quickest into popular areas. Proper disinfection requires soaking in specialist chemicals, but a thorough wash will help.

I'm not sure Tam

Think it mainly attacks Lawsons Cypress, but the article doesnt rule out other species dying from it.

Ness :)

Let's hope it can contain itself, there must be lot's of arboreal disease about, much like our colds and flu's.

Hmm, I wonder if this is the same one thats affecting a plot of Nothofagus in Kilmun arboretum... Nasty one, can spread via waterways etc.

There are reports of Phytophthora ramorum at a Kite feeding site that I've held events at. There are signs around requesting visitors to wash footwear etc, but I recon until they supply the means to do it on site, they are fighting a loosing battle. The area was heavy with dissinfecting mats during the Foot & Mouth crisis, so the knowledge of how to do it is within the the community, just not feasible at this time - maybe when widespread areas are clear felled someone might have the idea - yes I have suggested it.
