I've been gifted a reasonably new axe by someone who couldn't be bothered to look after it. The axe is completely sound, but the head is covered in rust.

What's the best method for cleaning it up and keeping it clean?

Hi,
Go to your local engineers merchants and buy some Garryson Blocks.
They are like flexible sanding blocks but are constructed entirely of abrasive and as such do not wear out quickly. Designed for the job they are excellent for removing rust.
