Canoeing and camping in France

Hi,

I've just been invited to two weeks of canoeing and camping in Aquitaine, and was wandering if anyone can advise me on the French attitude to this sort of thing.

For some of the trip we will be staying on land belonging to friends, but for the other time we would rather camp wild that book into some large horrible municipal campsite.
