The canoe looks a lot better already, Earthpeace. Did you use boiled or raw linseed? The raw takes a lot longer to dry. Was the hole caused by rot? I'll Email the Chasse Maree tomorrow, that's the contact given to me by the naval architect and see if they know anything more about the builder.

I should think it will be a pleasure to paddle this canoe.

Looking good!
Have you thought of making a wooden plug for the hole?
You could try just glueing a small plug, or ven have it as a removable bung...

Ok canoe is 166cm long, 77 cm wide and 32 cm deep.
I used raw linseed.
Thanks for the complement John Fenna, its not possible to block it with a plug as it is not round more bean shaped.
It was caused by rot, looks like it had a roof leak dripping on it. shame but i prefer it being there then at the end joints.

look forward to hearing what you find out jojo thanks for the effort

Cut out a circular section (making sure a round plug would fi and get rid of any potentially rotting wood in the area) or carve a bean shaped plug........
OK I will shut up....I want your canoe though!

The postage alone would cripple me financially!
Thanks for the offer but SWMBO thinks I still have too many canoes - even though I sold six of them and only have four left!
Wives can be strange creatures at times and I admit that I will never understand women.
Love 'em - yes. Understand - NO!

Merci Beaucoup

So sorry I only saw the ongoing thread today.

As a Belgian, I can help out a bit.

The reason you didn't find a boulevard des martyrs in Ghent is because the offical language in that city is now Dutch.

"117 boulevard des martyrs, Gand" now reads "martelarenlaan 117, 9000 Gent" (East Flanders, Belgium)

The martelarenlaan is a well known large boulevard in the south of the city. There are no boat builders by the name of Anneman left as far as I know. The reference to "martyrs" suggests to me the boat must be post 1918, as the boulevard was probably renamed for the WWI civil victims.

Hi Ketchup
Thanks for that bit of info,:You_Rock_
My neighbour who is also Belgian, thinks the same.

For what its worth (especially after such a long time!) I can confirm that Fr Annemans was active in Ghent (Gand) during the 1920s and 30s.
We know that he constructed a number of International 12-foot Sailing Dinghies between 1923 and 1937. (You can see a picture of one of these on the 'news' page of www.12footdinghy.org)

Blimey, that's an old one I never thought would reappear. I wonder what happened to Earthpeace? I don't think she has been seen for a long time now. It's still a very nice canoe though!

That really is a lovely canoe you have there Earthpeace and it's been great reading this thread. Mr. Fenna is right about repairing this boat with a wood plug, or otherwise have it professionally repaired. This boat is certainly very valuable and there is a huge amount of interest in handmade wooden craft like this, in my humble opinion, it is definitely worth restoring correctly.
Enjoy it!
