Blacks going

  • Hey Guest, Early bird pricing on the Summer Moot (29th July - 10th August) available until April 6th, we'd love you to come. PLEASE CLICK HERE to early bird price and get more information.
I heard about this on the TV this morning, another one going. :( Not good.
They were for me sort of the middle of the road choice when in town (well from what I found anyway), with Tiso being a bit on the expensive side and Millets at the cheaper end.

Just read that they actually own Millets as well...

Blacks in Gloucester has had a closing down sale since November. Haven't been in since Christmas but it's probably gone now. Often used to buy odds 'n'n sods there. Shame, but also I don't know what direction it will take if it's taken over by one of the chav superstores like JDSports.

I'll not miss Millets but Blacks were handy for last minute stuff before trips, saying that I've got a Go Outdoors down the road now which is much better than Blacks ever was.

Its going to end up like OZ and the states where there are just a handful of big supermaket chains that supply everything under one roof. Everything then becomes mono-tone :(

There are about 30 different outdoor stores in Keswick alone, so there are plenty of players left in the market…
I expect someone will buy the brand Blacks - it has some good resonances for the older generation.

It'll end up getting taken over by someone like sports direct like the karrimor brand, will just mean expensive name tag on cheaper gear

Had some kerrimor stuff from SD and the quality varies some really good and some carp but as the say "you pays your money you takes your choice"

Sad to see another highstreet name in trouble though

Very sad to see them like this. When I was a lad they were very serious camping outfitters. They sold everything from little basic tents to serious high altitude expedition and climbing gear.

From happier times

In the woods if possible.
We're all to blame.

If we only want to buy cheap tat from China then we can't blame people for selling cheap tat from China instead of the real deal. But the PileItHighWarehouse can sell cheap tat from China a lot more effectively than a genuine outdoor retailer, so what's going to happen to that retailer?

It look like the group will be cherry-picked and asset-stripped, and the names relaunched with no debt. That will leave some people out of work, and a bunch of suppliers empty-handed. We all pick up the tab for that. It's the price of wanting to be paid more than we're prepared to pay anyone else.

Blacks have a lot to blame themselves for too.
I found on thier website a new rucksack that was reduced from £90 to £37.I phoned the shop to see if they had it in stock and they did.I asked if they would match the price on their own website and they couldn't.If they had I would have bought it instore as it was I bought it from the online store saving a fortune. If they do this to their own shops it seems inevitable that the high street stores are going to close.

Well said Ged.

Personally I am not too sorry I would not go in the local Blacks out of choice, was sick of being harassed every two minutes by "U all rite mate" from frankly unskilled staff. Sorry for the folks who have lost their jobs though. Nearly as bad as the Cotswold boutique that has just opened, nice guys but no stock and ludicrous pricing. What's the logic of putting all the reduced and special offers upstairs next to the cafe and guidebooks and not even telling the customers it is there  Oh of course you don't really want to sell that stuff do you, the punters should buy the expensive stuff.

Mountain warehouse and go outdoors have taken much of the trade in Norwich. Must check out blacks for any chance of a bargain though.
