Available fuel

In a recent thread on the ideal hiking stove, the topic of fuel availability has come up. Given how popular the triangia meths stoves and solid fuel esbit style stoves are amongst bushcrafters, I wonder if there is any sense in a topic on how available the different fuels are in different countries. Also included is the name of meths in the local language, to aid tracking it down.

I'll start the list with the ones I know of:

UK - Meths: Available in most hardware shops, and some larger supermarkets; Esbit: most camping/outdoor shops
Netherlands - Brandspiritus - Meths: Available in most hardware shops, and some larger supermarkets; Esbit: most camping/outdoor shops. "we honestly didn't have too much luck finding it in smaller supermarkets while camping"

diesil parrafin keroseine longer chain light petrols- the fuel of the world, easy to find any where

alcohol - widely avaliable especially africa and brazil, but not in europe america etc. More specialised. Troublesome finding

Petrol - even more specialised world wide due to storage problems, more difficulty finding

gas - highly specialised few outlets voilatile inflexible

hexi - and this is a piece of string

biomass - extremley new, not well understood

Denatured alcohol is cheap and widely available in every DIY shop or paint shop in the US; in small 1 quart cans or larger 5 gallon ones. I suspect whoever compiled the data to the contrary only looked in camping/hiking supply stores. In that case, they'd be right. Alcohol stoves aren't that poipular here (comparitively0 so it'e not widely available in such shops.

Despite the terminology in the chart (some countries; Israel was one) Avgas and Jet fuel or not the same thing. The first is a high octane gasoline while the second is closer to kerosene.

And I'm curious; the chart says England doesn't have avgas available. Do you no longer fly small private airplanes there?

'kerosene' in Australia is what is called 'paraffin' in the UK.

France has Alcool à brûler (meths) widely available.

In Russia, you can freely buy in stores: kerosene, gasoline, diesel oil, acetone. Ethyl alcohol can not be bought in stores.
Vodka not suitable as a fuel since it contains 40% alcohol.

In spanish is "Alcohol de quemar" and you can buy in the "droguerias". Sbit, in outdoor shop only.

Mineral spiritsis not methylated spirits, it is more "oily" and used as paint thinner/brush cleaner, but in Canada denatured alcohol is sold as "gas line antifreeze" (removes moisture from petrol) and is easily available.

And there are many places where you are not allowed to burn wood. Indeed, to go on some of the long distance trails in Australia, you have to show your stove to the rangers, to prove you have a 'liquid or gas fueled stove'.

Alcool a brule Alcohol for burning) is nearest to meths in France, but is clear not coloured. It is available in even the smallest village store.
