.....There isn't a chance the mother, who is on a 2nd degree manslaughter charge, is going to be able to keep her children given the nature of the event. So these two kids have effectively lost both parents.....

She hasn't been convicted yet and even if she is, she could get a light sentence, or even commutation (although I hope not) She has a better chance of keeping the kids than you'd imagine.
