I know there are a number of people on these forums who work in the environmental sector so I thought I would ask on the off chance. Can anyone tell me which Gov. Organisation took over from the Countryside Commission and if/where I could look for papers published by the countryside commission.

Thanks,
TT

I thought it would be NE but there was at least one or two others before Natural England came in to existence at the beginning of this year and I cant find the Countryside Commission stuff I'm after on there. Isn't reorganisation and re-shuffling fantastic!

Cheers re-SAK :D

I think it was the Countryside agency. I see they have an archive on their site. I fear I may be running egg-sucking classes for women who's kids have kids, so I'll stop now in the hope that someone who knows what they're talking about comes along! :)

Not sure if this helps but most of the 'countryside' agencies have recently been brought together to form Natural England this included English Nature, the landscape, access and recreation elements of the Countryside Agency and the environmental land management functions of the Rural Development Service.
I believe the Countryside commission existed up until April 1999 when the Countryside Agency was set up this then became part of Natural England.

Google 'natural england' they have loads of info on their web page.

The countryside commission operated in the days of the Nature Conservency Council and with devolution we all have our own regional orgs now.

In Scotland it is Scottish National Heritage or Scottish National Heretics...depending which side of the fence you are on! :D

The Countryside Commission material should be available at all major regional librarys.

Thanks for the help everyone, unfortunately I don't seem to be able to find a lot of the documents which I keep finding in reference lists on the Natural England data base. Thanks for the help though and the PM's :) I'll keep looking!

It's not DEFRA is it? Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs?
http://www.defra.gov.uk/

Their publications: http://www.defra.gov.uk/corporate/publications/default.htm

If the documents you're after are available to the public via the internet and
you're having trouble by all means PM me and I'll see if I can hunt them down.
It's what I do for a living :D Of course they may not actually be freely available
and you might have to buy them.

Some very interesting links in this thread actually!

Just through I would add I am doing my lit review for my dissertation proposal on the visitor usage of the south west coast path so, on the off change, if anyone has anything they think might be of use feel free to drop me a PM ;)

Well it's in the British Library, shelfmark "3482.050000 524 DSC"
but it doesn't appear to be something that you can download from
anywhere. There also don't appear to be any details of how you
can buy a copy.

The only link to DEFRA that I found for it was on this page - so
it may be worth contacting the authors of that document to see if
they can suggest alternatives if you can't access the British Library,
which is in London...

This of interest?

This seems to be a summary of something vaguely similar from '96.
