It was time once again for my favorite group winter outing. Unlike many solo backpacking trips I didn't have to worry about pack weight.

The sled with Kifaru EMR and large ALICE on board.

The pack on my back.

GO!

Not much snow this year. Kinda surprised me.

No sooner do I arrive camp my finger gets cut. The Wetterlings Les Stroud Bushman axe is nice but the sheath is a total POS. It popped right off removing the axe from my pack resulting in cut. I gotta bend a kydex sheath for it. The cut was deep and it was a problem for the rest of the outing. I guess one pro of hanging out with outdoors people who are into preparedness and gear is an overabundance of medical supplies. I got it patched up fast.

First night hanging out in a 8-man.

The traditional Hungarian meats.

Around camp the next day.

Yes there was a drone. Overview of the area.

A bit lower to earth.

Out for a hike.

Had the new WCF PSK plus Kydex I bent.

Found a nice spot for a day camp. I will probably do a thread on the actual firecraft involved as it was a good time.

A Canadian chocolate bar prepared in the traditional style. Ok they don't actually cook a chocolate bar on a stick over a fire but it does come from canada.

Just some more firecraft fun. Punk wood found near the day camp to be charred.

Not my best char but it caught with flint and steel methodology.

Day camp food.

Heading back to camp everyone was processing firewood for their tipi shelters. A tipi camp runs on wood and water. Wood taken that wasn't in direct contact with the ground.

My Kifaru 4-man with liner and DIY stove.

Up the next day for some target shooting. Not my rifle but a nice one.

No one is exactly roughing it.

Out for another short day hike. Maybe a mile or so.

When you have a group firewood collecting and processing is a snap.

Twig fire methodology using firesteel. It's just not about the fancy gear and drones. Robbie did make an interesting statement which I have incorporated in my BS. "We spend a small fortune to live like homeless people" or something along those lines.

Making use of the group cooking stove aka fire.

Conifer needle tea or rather the beginnings of it.

Steeping. On a side note a closed cell ground pad is a very nice winter camping item.

Party in the 8-man for the last night.

All packed up, at the truck getting ready to load the sled. Not that much snow this year but it was a great time.

For those who are still with me if yea got too much time on your hands here is a video.

It was nice to shoot. I hear your cry brother and we are a dying breed. :( Here maybe this will make everyone feel better. :)

Not sure what handguns have to do with bushcraft but if you posted this hoping for a reaction (BTW you've not chosen the best week to be posting pistol p0rn on a UK forum) then Lynyrd Skynyrd put it better than I could!

Enjoyed your post's and pic's thanks for sharing, what range did you shoot the Garand at? as for comment's about the pistol not being bushcraft well maybe not in the UK, but each country to its own,and the U.S does have animal's that are capable of taking on man, we dont.

It's not actually porn. It was taken on this bushcraft outing same as the rifles, saws, axes and knives. Used to target shoot in camp. We also used this knife. A Mora Signal on the same outing.

Knife from the same outing.

Here let me show yea all something.

This is from another outing.

Hiking into the night.

Making rose hip tea in the paratipi at night.

Nice little heated shelter camp. Going to do this again this week! I hope!

I have tools with me.

This is one of them.

Twig fire ready to GO! I was out and wanted to get warm.

It is part of my cultural distinctiveness. Everyone has different life experiences and that's all good! The world would be dull if each of us sees things the same way. I grew up on a farm and we used tools, firearms among them. So there is often a firearm in camp. As for what's Bushcraft or not I am showing the entire experience. Some parts people might do and perhaps others not so much. If not every aspect is Bushcraft to other people I totally respect that. If some say what I am doing isn't bushcraft I respect that as well. However to me it is bushcraft.

I apologize to the mods if any rules were broken as that wasn't my intent. I like Bushcraft UK and would never intentionally do anything to harm this place.

I fired that rifle before and it's nice but not during this outing. There are bears and mouse around camp for sure but I really hate ticks given Lyme disease.

I think you are fine MWW. Firearms threads on here are always popular.

It's perhaps difficult for us in the UK (generally) to understand the part firearms play in other cultures. Then again it's been a while in the UK since anyone got chewed up by a wolf, mountain lion or bear.

Though unless you are going to shoot your buddy in the leg I have no idea what purpose the Derringer serves.

Thanks brother. That wasn't during a group outing and we don't shoot each other in the leg. LOL! But I do understand the question and appreciate the humor. :) I was solo when packing the Derringer in that photo. It's not just any old Derringer. I have it loaded with .45 long colt and .410 slugs.

I ran into two bears on the trail this year. One was a surprise encounter within 40 feet the other was lounging out on my favorite moss bed that I will be hiking to later on today for exercise. Here is a photo of the spot. I will take another today as going there. I like to photograph the same spot as the seasons change.

From the warmer months! The bear wasn't there that day as it ran off a week before.

Then again why not. Look at this bed!

And right next to it look at the food. LOL!

I guess it's not just my favorite spot! Never mind the trail. One was in my driveway last year. Sorry for the crappy video.

One lean-to in a neighboring state was temporarily shut down due to an attack just before I hiked there. They were still looking for the bear. So I slept 1/4 mile away in the bush. Is is a rational concern? Probably not as ticks are my real concern. That and people who can't stop using their phones when driving. So the big stainless steel Derringer that shoots shotgun slugs does have a purpose. Mostly to make me feel better going to sleep as the chances are so low. LOL!

Last encounter I had with a bear was a black bear in Canada. It took a .300 Win Mag through the heart and lungs and still managed 30 yards. We subsequently couldn't find its heart at all.

If you came across an aggressive mother I feel you would be significantly under gunned.

.410 from that short a barrel would be unlikely to get through the pelt at what 20 yards?

You are not the only one who feels that way! LOL! Totally under gunned. I would be in trouble for sure but think a .45 long colt silvertip or .410 slug are probably better than screaming and kicking if one is trying to drag me from the shelter during a night predatory encounter which is unlikely but well........... yea know....... I don't hike with a rifle or shotgun unless hunting or at a group event that promotes target shooting as an activity. I do have a bear bell and make plenty of noise. I don't think this actually frightens bears but do believe it makes for surprise encounters less likely however that isn't always the case as happened to me this year with the very near encounter on the trail. We didn't see each other until the very last second. I use the bear box or hang my food away from camp. If in a heavy bear population areas I don't cook in camp. Also I never leave trash but that's just common sense regardless of critters. Only a fool tosses their garbage in the woods.
