Hey Guest, Early bird pricing on the Summer Moot (29th July - 10th August) available until April 6th, we'd love you to come. PLEASE CLICK HERE to early bird price and get more information.
Thanks all for your suggestions. I just wanted to let you know how we got on!
The day started around 16:00, and after a couple of hours on the hills just doing some basic navigation brush-ups, we had a pub lunch and then set off up one of the Fan’s at 21:00, leaving the car in the...
Is this going ahead then? I would potentially be interested after the course run last year, but would be looking for something with a more physical/active emphasis?
Cheers,
There are some really good ideas there. He's already done a few triathlons, and although I wouldn't be able to keep up with him on the swimming part (I'm a sailor more than a swimmer) I like the mixed bag of events there. There was a improvised raft I had to build as part of a week's survival...
I've been thinking about that and should possibly clarify that I will have to do everything that he does - so things like the drills etc will lead to punishment for both of us - and he can pick me up on things I will be checking on him (pocket drill, map coordinates etc.) This way I get some...
Good point, well made.
I'll ensure that there is 8 hours of sleep and recovery built into the event - and the drive is only 3 hours, which we will probably include a break in as well!
Thanks for the ideas all - here are some of my own.
Please feel free to provide feedback - however harsh it may be, or additional ideas to add to the list!
Event:
Navigation exercise over by the Brecon Beacons, starting after dark - probably about 10pm on a Friday after a week at work...
Thanks coconino and mrcharly - some really great inspiration and ideas. I especially like the idea of the complete bike ride, as both he and I are into endurance cycling so this is something we could look to do!
Cheers,
You must have read my mind! :-)
This is very similar to what I have planned actually - but instead of having the maths questions at the top, I had thought about navigational "dead reconing" excercises, with adjustments for declination and "compass error". This is specifically to help him...
It won't be as hard, granted, but that doesn't mean you should not try.
I believe 2 days is enough to reach physical fatigue for anyone, no matter how superhuman. The idea would be to then add in items on top of that such as navigational/maths excercises, things like the "pocket drill"...
How about carrying water in a reindeer's scrotum? How many litres could they carry again.... :-)
For a point of clarification though, we only have up to two days at a time to spare for any challenge.
Hi all,
Later this year a friend of mine is undertaking the task of rowing the atlantic as part of a two man crew. In addition to all the excellent training he'll be getting from people who have done it in the past, he has asked me to try and come up with some "challenges" that will test his...
I use these:
http://www.dmmclimbing.com/productsDetails.asp?pid=3&pid2=239
With the variant of "quicklock" type for camping, or Locksafe for climbing. The extra size of the DMM Boa gives you loads of space to connect multiple things to the same point (for my hammock, you can connect both the...
I forgot to mention that it's based around a clipper - so over time the knife can be replaced as it gets broken/damaged, but the sheath re-used.
The firesteel holder is the same size for one of Leonidas' "extra large" firesteels, or a standard size one.
Cheers
After some time spent on these forums and others asking around for advice, I decided to give some Kydex joy a go.
Thanks to Tom for some Kydex supplies, I got cracking and produced three sheaths over the past two weeks of varying design.
The first one never survived long enough to be used...
... and a way to light a fire, that doesn't involve a firesteel. Probably just a decent waterproof lighter or five million.
As for the med kit, a bumper size of anti-fungals wouldn't do any harm either!
I have a ruined groundsheet that attests to that fact from the beach we were filming on actually. I knew it would happen, but it was freezing!
As for you "owning" me, I'll say it's a joint idea and leave it at that :-)
*winces*
Each to their own, but I find that any stable platform that won't damage your axe does the job does the job. Depending on the length of wood you are splitting, you can get away with using flat rocks - but again that's my own cheating method as you must be splitting long logs with the...
We have about 4.5 gigs of film from the original shoot (it's all done in high def on a digital camera) and had an original cut that was about 10 minutes long with totally different scenes in it.
If it's still popular, I can spend a few hours cutting that together into something nice as a...
