Wow! Seriously amazing site you got to camp at there. Those morning landscapes were simply stunning. That's it! Winter camping in Lapland added to the bucket list!

A fire like that is a welcoming sight, overnight, at this time of year more than ever. Looks like a great time! Congrats!

February Bimble in the Highlands - Pic Heavy

That's brilliant - I've got a photo just like that: However she's more at home mimicking the Loch Ness Monster: Not a problem - will do!

February Bimble in the Highlands - Pic Heavy

Well, yes, but there's loving water and there's sheer bloody mindedness. I'm more than happy to join her on a bright day like this but at the bottom of a glen in the middle of February - not so much. She had fun at least. :D

February Bimble in the Highlands - Pic Heavy

It's amazing what atmosphere a chilly shaded wood contains - hang around too long and it can chill you to the bone. Hiking back out of the wee glen blasted more than the cobwebs clear. Not half as much as I enjoyed it! Thanks so much. It was the first time out with my camera in the best...

BcUK Photograph of 2014 February competition

Best viewed 100% as it loses some of its impact scaled down for the forum. Taken yesterday and a quick straw poll in the office reckons this is a Norway Spruce - though we are open to challenges on this!

February Bimble in the Highlands - Pic Heavy

It's Boblainy Woods, south of Beauly and Kiltarlity: Here's a map. So about 20 miles from the drome at Evanton as the crow flies, or 25 by road.

February Bimble in the Highlands - Pic Heavy

The missus and I took a long weekend over this past Valentine's weekend and today I gave her the best present possible - a long lie in while I took the dog for a walk. I recently picked up a new 1:25000 map and poring over it I spotted a great big lump of woodland 30 minutes from Inverness -...

    Log Bench

I have to agree with everyone else here, that's a really special piece. The metal complements the wood nicely and vice-verse. If you don't mind my asking, how did you go about stripping all the bark off the log? Draw-knife, or something else?

    Pair of Mini Svords

Albus, They look really great. I'm looking to mod my mini svord soon and I fancy doing something similar. What do you use as your brass pins? Is it just brass rod stock cut to length or is it a bit cleverer than that? Do you epoxy them in place? Mike

    Sub £100 automatic watch recommendations

I've got that exact watch which just arrived last week. It's great so far, keeping pretty good time. I'll probably change the strap for a NATO one soon as the stock strap isn't great but that's all I've found off with it. According to some of the posts on the watch forums a lot of the 5 series...

    Monthly build along?

Well, I managed to continue the trend of splitting the head on my needle, but unlike everyone else I split it in two places completely removing the top. Oops :p I decided that instead of repairing it, I'd use my knowledge gained from the first one and make my second even better. I'd agree with...

    What did you buy today?

Got myself a nice new watch. I've been fascinated with automatic winding ones for a while, but all I had was a cheap Chinese job that lost loads of time every day. This should satisfy the watch craving for a while.

    Monthly build along?

Sounds like just the thing for a newbie carver like myself. I'm in! Mike

    Whoes near me?

Hi Lodian, I'm from Inverness, but commuting in to work in Forres. When I posted in the Introductions forum there was a bit of a discussion of the woods in the area, so it might be worth a read: http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=106264 Mike

    Hello from Morayshire, Scotland

Hello and welcome, Another one from my neck of the woods! I live in Inverness and work in Forres, so I hope to be getting out and about in the area a bit more over the summer. Mike

Someone put me right on hook knives.

I'm only getting started with all of this carving, but I've found the recommendations on Ben Orford's site to be of great help. He suggests that you should start out with a small, right handed, single edged, crook knife - one that cuts towards you when held in your right hand. He's also got a...

    What did you buy today?

Svord Peasant Mini in Blue. Not too sure about the colour, but I have some nice, odd bits of wood in the shed to make some new scales.
