    He's doing that wrong...

Only Cub Scouts? I've got an Explorer who's terrified of matches. But give him cotton wool and a firesteel and there'll be a blaze in no time.

    Decent reasonably priced compass

And whatever you do buy don't leave it near a strong magnetic field! I've got one where the red 'N' end of the needle points roughly south as a result of leaving it somewhere it shouldn't have been.

How To Organise A Bushcraft Camp For Scouts (or anyone else probably)

In the UK Scouts (both boys and girls) are age 10 1/2 to 14. So they don't always have the experience needed to research and plan something from scratch, especially if they've never tried the activity before, without a fair bit of adult guidance. The next section up, Explorers (14 - 18) do...

    Evesham?

Hop on the train to Moreton in Marsh, only a couple of stops. Plenty of good walking around there, especially if you head west from Moreton. If you want to be shown around let me know or drop me a PM for some suggested routes to explore on your own.

    Improving navigation skills?

Highly recommend that book. Very clear and easy to understand. Also take the map out on local walks, even though you don't need it. That way you can get used to how different features look on the map.

    calling all scout leaders.

Speaking as a female Scout Leader shirt pockets are pretty well useless anyway, even if you're not built like Bushcraft Betty. Cargo pocket on trousers works for keeping most things safe. Personally I don't want to go back to the old female leaders blouses, they were really grim.

What are you planning to do this May day weekend?

Checking out a 10 mile hike my Scouts are doing the following weekend. And tidying up the house before my parents and friend from New Zealand come to stay in a couple of weeks . Don't think she'll appreciate the two sleeping bags and tent that's currently dumped on the spare bed to...

    Bushcraft and allotments

And the Hopi blue corn please. My most useful and used bushcraft skill (or maybe it's a Scout skill) is being able to lash my bean poles together properly so they don't collapse half way through the season.

Rough Close 'Jubilee Bank Holiday Weekend' Meet

I'd love to come but our Scouts annual camp starts that weekend. I'll just have to make do with a week in the Lake District:camping: Hope you all have a good time.

Day sack for SWMBO. Suggestions please.

I've been using one of these since about 2008. It's my standard go anywhere bag. It's been to the Alps 3 times, Norway, Sweden and Italy, plus it gets used just about every other weekend in the UK and taken on work trips when I have to go away. And it still looks like new. It's also small...

    bow drill woes

I use two limpet shells one inside the other. Fairly sure I got it off here a while back. A lot less friction than with a wood bearing block (I struggle to get smoke using one of them, never mind an ember!). I think the two shells were recommended to stop your hand getting burnt. Also try...

Why look after your Kit !!!

So long as you remember to put the burner in a plastic bag before stowing it away. Otherwise you get an electrochemical reaction that can destroy the burner. OK it won't happen in half and hour but leave it six months and you might find it doesn't work too well.

So did anyone else feel the boom

It was pretty loud here in north east Gloucestershire. Brought the cats in for tea in record time too! :lmao:

Saving/Storing the dust from a bowdrill

I keep any dust left over in a small plastic bag and use it to part fill the notch before I start. Works for me. Valid practice? I'm not bothered what the purists think.

    washing

It's not just the bacteria, fungal infections can take hold really quickly, especially if you're wearing waterproof clothing. They can be very hard to shift afterwards too. A quick once over with a damp flannel or wet wipe only takes a few minutes and I feel a whole lot better for it.

The Fiery Pants of Shame - Norwegian holiday/Arctic course report.

After a day at work that was just what I needed - brilliant:thankyou:

    Collapsible water vessels

I've had a couple of the Ortlieb water bags for about 5 years, both the 10l and the 4l sizes. They've survived being used and abused by Scouts, dragged around in a canoe and rolled up at the bottom of a rucksack. They don't have a tap but there is a sort of inner cap that unscrews seperatly...

    Bird song is....

I was camping up in Scotland a couple of years back in early June, so long days. From about 3 am to 11 pm there was a very loud cuckoo nearby. As soon as s/he gave up the night shift came on duty - a pair of tawny owls. Between the daylight, the midges and the birds there wasn't much chance...

setting up a bug out bag tomorrow

Based on your scenario maybe base it around the things the Japanese put in their grab bags for earthquakes http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12759840. Plus as others have said copies of important documents.
