I had mentioned boiled peanuts in the Veagn thread. Thought I 'd share a video I found on them. This one is for the spicey Cajun version but if you don't like spicey, just use ordinary salt. Also you can speed up the cooking time with a pressure cooker or alternatively, use a slow cooker overnight.

I don't think he mentioned it in the video but it'e best done with peanuts that are slightly under-ripe.

A couple of reasons really:

1. Yes it takes hours but so would peeling them before hand. They're usually boiled in large quantities and put out as snacks to peel as you eat; the same way as when you parch them (roast them to yankees)

2. The shell protects them during the process and keeps them from desintegating.

I've grown peanuts in the UK - but, rather like growing root ginger - not for long enough to get a useful crop. I think it isn't warm enough for long enough.

It's bad enough trying to find un-roasted peanuts never mind unripe ones :(

This time of year raw peanuts are in most every grocery store here; in bins to but by the pound from the produce section. That said, green ones are a bit harder but not impossible. Roadside stands here sell boiled peanuts much like the street vendors in London sell swarmas. They're also in almost every bar as bar snacks along with popcorn, etc.

Now that I think of it, I used to see raw ones in the supermarkets over there also.

I think a lot of people here have been made scared of peanuts by the media, either death by allergy or death by choking. There's also the fact they don't grow here

Unroasted shelled peanuts are easy enough to find, (99p for 300g) and it doesn't take any longer to shell peanuts than it takes to shell peas, but what are swarmas ?

In morrisons too. Think they are called redskin peanuts or somesuch

"Redskins" are actually a specific varietal of peanut (raw or cooked) They're the ones that have a thin red skin between toe not and the shell. Also called Spanish peanuts.

.....it doesn't take any longer to shell peanuts than it takes to shell peas.....

That was the lesser of the two reasons I listed. I also forgot to add a third; the shell adds some flavor (like a cooking meat on the bone adds some) and part of the senstion eating them is sucking the brime from the shell.
