Ive been messing around with Fan Birds again of late, in particular the last couple of days has seen me make about a dozen or more, some are ok, others are now plant labels and fire wood, even with the failures it's been great fun and some amount of frustration, but the practice paid off and today, these two flew out of the workshop

The two birds come from the opposing sides of a small Ash log, the blanks were approx 5 inches in length, two and a half inches wide and about an inch thick, the top bird ended up with a total of 53 feathers and the bottom one had 68 feathers, some of the feathers are still a bit thick, but thankfully as i had so many i could lose them and i really need to ensure i rive the feathers all of the way down.

I must extend my gratitude to Sean Hellman for his encouragement & advice that he has freely offered whilst ive been trying to get my head around making these.

Thanks for having a looksee and as always, constructive criticism is welcome.

Wow Kepis, they're pretty spectacular, thought about a tutorial here or on your blog? I'm not sure how they go together. Very cool.

They really are good.

From an earlier post for those who want to have a go:

"For those interested in fan birds, Sally Nye, one of the leading exponents of fan birds, has posted a video on You Tube about 'riving'.

It is at:

I'd say it is not too difficult to get something almost acceptable but a lot more difficult - and needing lots of practice - to reach Kepis's standard.

Amazing work Kepis, how long did it take to make each one?

Thanks Dean, not really sure how long they take to be honest, next time i make a few i'll time myself, would be useful to know really.
