Leatherman Vista Hunting Multi-tool Print E-mail
Written by John Fenna

The new multi-tool from the Leatherman stable is designed for the outdoorsman and, rather than centring on a pair of pliers, this multi-tool centres on a pair of by-pass pruners that cut through finger-thick (and more) growth with frightening ease.

Made to the same high standards that have made Leatherman Tools world famous, the Vista is very well engineered, the shears being ultra sharp and having an extra wide opening to the smoothly closing jaws for tackling thicker wood.

As well as being spring loaded for ease of use, the pruner/shears lock close for safety and transportation and are enclosed in the handles when the tool is folded up and put away in the supplied nylon sheath.
However, the pruner/shears are not all the Vista has to offer – it is a multi-tool after all – and, as well as having a soft wire cutter at the back of the pruner’s jaws, the Vista’s contoured thermoplastic handles (with soft ridged textured grip panels) also hold more tools. In the lower handle you find a chunky and solid Philips “combo” knife of drop point utility style, and the biggest awl ever found on a Leatherman tool. This awl, with a large eye and thread channel, is not only ideal for heavy canvas or leather repair/construction, but also for “braddling” holes in things and “sewing” vegetation together to make mats etc.

In the “top” handle you find a very effective 8.5cm saw that cuts on the pull to minimise the risk of breakage, and an strangely shaped tool that combines the functions of flat-head screwdriver, bottle opener and shotgun choke tube tool.
Each tool can be individually accessed and, with the handles closed for use, no tool can close on your hand. A useful safety feature!

Each Vista Multi-tool comes with a well-made nylon pouch with horizontal and vertical belt loop fittings, a snap-fastened lid and cammo print finish. Behind the multi-tool’s pocket there is an open-topped pocket for accessories etc.

As you would expect, the Vista comes with full care and maintenance instructions and the standard Leatherman 25-year warranty.

An impressive and useful piece of field kit, the Leatherman Vista Hunting Multi-tool is a compact and discreet tool of superior versatility and cutting power that could look very attractive to many outdoors folk and packs into a neat 15 x 7 x 4cm package.

The Leatherman Vista Hunting Multi-tool costs around £64.95.

Something seems to have fallen off the disk of the words - it should read "find a chunky and solid Philips screwdriver, a serrated plain edge/serrated edge “combo” knife of drop point utility style"...sorry about that!

zebralight2thumb.jpgSuch is the lure of these shiny objects on the male psyche that a number of dedicated collectors’ forums exist, inhabited by the silhouetted forms of men squinting at light meters, bathed in the brilliant glow of their own personal supernovas, mumbling incoherently about Lux, Lumens and thermal runaway.

Fallkniven F1 knife (05.04.2007)
thumb_f11.JPG The F1 is a basic fixed blade knife with a 'drop-point' 3.5inch blade (made of VG 10 stainless steel) and a man-made (Thermorun) handle. Originally designed for use by Aircrew of the Swedish Defence Forces as a survival knife, as any survivor will tell you a 'survival-knife' is the one you have with you at the time, so the F1 is designed to be small & light enough to be carried at all times but robust enough to withstand the abuse it would encounter in a survival situation within the Arctic Circle...

Sabre 45 is probably the rucksack that others are marked against in the bushcraft market. I was very interested to see what all the hype was about and if the real thing lived up to it all!

Maxpedition Jumbo Versipack Review (03.07.2007)
thumb_Overview Bag.JPGI was intrigued by Spamel’s thread on the Snugpak Response Pak – or their other types of ‘grab-n-go’ bags - and what people carried in them. I’m a bit of a bag junkie, partly because of my work (military) and partly because of a quest to be able to carry the right equipment for the right job in practically any situation.  I guess the ‘Holy Grail’ is effectively a bag that you instinctively grab, without thinking about it, before you go off for an adventure.

BCB Crusader Mess TIn with Lid (05.07.2007)
thumb_crusadermesstin1.jpgThe mess tin is a solid stainless steel and relatively lightweight cooking vessel. It comes with a well fitting lid, which is a bonus compared with the old aluminium version which came without a lid. It saves precious fuel and makes your water (or whatever you are preparing in it) come to a boil significantly faster.
