thumb_victoria fall (Small) (Small).JPGThere are some bits of kit that really don’t get the respect they deserve, they go about their job so efficiently and with so little ostentation that they barely get noticed. Their role however essential is deemed mundane, and no-one lavishes attention upon them around the evening fire.

Whilst other more ‘worthy’ items are unpacked, inspected and placed on shelves and in draws, these live permanently in the dark recesses of our jacket pockets and kitbags, drawing little more than a cursory glance to check that they are still there before we set off.

In Front and Behind the lens, Aberystwyth
Written by Pete Williams
thumb_raymears2.jpgRay was introduced, and made his entry to a sustained ovation, whereupon he got straight on with the business at hand. I have read some of Rays books and, though some of his photos were the same as the book illustrations, it was by no means a case of "I've seen all this before".

In Front and Behind the lens, Telford.
Written by Big Bad Stu
thumb_raymears1.jpgI was lucky enought to get a ticket to go to see Ray Mears at Oakengates, Telford on Saturday 29 September 2007. The theatre was packed full and Ray delivered a captivating talk on the highlights of his career focussing on various groups of people he has been lucky enough to spend time with.

Prevent Insect Repellent
Written by Stuart Goring
thumb_Summer_28_0003.jpgI bet there’s quite a few of you that like me dread one aspect of the warmer weather - Culex spp, Culicoides impunctatus and all their mates.  Mosquitoes, midges and all sorts of biting, sucking insects come out to play, leaving those vulnerable to at best an itch and at worst some serious illnesses.

Traser Night Navigator IRIS 50 Compass
Written by Tony Bristow
thumb_trasercompass.jpgThe compass is chunky; tough; waterproof; and very readable in the dark, thanks to the fitted traser lights. I found it a dream to use and had no concerns when it came to trusting it to find my way, although I did need to know where I wanted to go, so after I had worked out my bearing it was plain sailing...

Teknolite torch
Written by Tony Bristow
thumb_teknolite-head.jpgThe techno light has a four LED light unit encased in a high impact plastic body. Overall the light is very good with nice clean illumination. I do not think that the torch is any more powerful than the other four LED lights on the market. I could not detect any visible difference between the teknolite and my 3 year old Lucido which is also a four LED torch...

Snugpak Pertex Shower Towel
Written by Tony Bristow
thumb_pertextowel.jpg They weigh about 65g and they are about 110 x 80 cm, which for a towel is very good indeed. When they are packed away they measure about 2 x 7 x 11cm. The drying time of the towels is excellent at 15 minutes or less after being well wetted.

caldera_cone_-_initial_-_boiling.jpgI've been playing around with various Pepsi can stoves for a while now and was intrigued when I saw how many reviews this little stove was getting, light and efficient what more could you want???

Tilley T3 Hat (04.06.2008)
tilley3.jpgHow many hats are guaranteed for life with a no quibble agreement?  The T3 is!  How many manufacturers insure the hat against loss or damage?  The T3 has a 2-year, all perils 50% deductible policy attached!
Gerber Multitool (02.06.2008)
gerbertool4.jpgThe jungle is a harsh environment for such an item because the tool was wet or the majority of the time. However, it stood up very well with little sign of rusting or corrosion even after coming back and allowing it to stand for a while.
Byrd Wrench (29.05.2008)
byrdwrench7.jpgUnique in its field, the Wrench is not based on the standard pliers set-up like every other model on the market but on a sliding adjustable pliers design
Snugpak Rocketpak (08.05.2008)

The rucksack is designed to be worn over military belt pouches, which means it rides high on the back. The belt is in actually fact a waist belt rather than a hip belt and fits around the waist.

Karrimor Dry bag (06.05.2008)

Thankfully we didn’t need to test this theory! The dry bag sat nicely in the bottom of the rucksacks and, as there are no valves or anything complicated to remember...

Fallkniven F1 knife (05.04.2007)
thumb_f11.JPG The F1 is a basic fixed blade knife with a 'drop-point' 3.5inch blade (made of VG 10 stainless steel) and a man-made (Thermorun) handle. Originally designed for use by Aircrew of the Swedish Defence Forces as a survival knife, as any survivor will tell you a 'survival-knife' is the one you have with you at the time, so the F1 is designed to be small & light enough to be carried at all times but robust enough to withstand the abuse it would encounter in a survival situation within the Arctic Circle...
Bushman UK Knives (23.03.2007)
thumb_bushman_pair_1.jpgI rate these knifes very highly. Both in design and construction
Maxpedition Jumbo Versipack Review (03.07.2007)
thumb_Overview Bag.JPGI was intrigued by Spamel’s thread on the Snugpak Response Pak – or their other types of ‘grab-n-go’ bags - and what people carried in them. I’m a bit of a bag junkie, partly because of my work (military) and partly because of a quest to be able to carry the right equipment for the right job in practically any situation.  I guess the ‘Holy Grail’ is effectively a bag that you instinctively grab, without thinking about it, before you go off for an adventure.
Karrimor Sabre 45 Rucksack (12.12.2007)

thumb_saber45front.jpg

Sabre 45 is probably the rucksack that others are marked against in the bushcraft market. I was very interested to see what all the hype was about and if the real thing lived up to it all!

Fire Steel (23.03.2007)
thumb_steelmain.jpgThe sparks that come off the steel, burn longer and hotter than anything I have used before. Sometimes they can sizzle away at 3000 degrees centigrade for a second or more,
BCB Crusader Mess TIn with Lid (05.07.2007)
thumb_crusadermesstin1.jpgThe mess tin is a solid stainless steel and relatively lightweight cooking vessel. It comes with a well fitting lid, which is a bonus compared with the old aluminium version which came without a lid. It saves precious fuel and makes your water (or whatever you are preparing in it) come to a boil significantly faster.
