I was lucky enought to get a ticket to go to see Ray Mears at Oakengates, Telford on Saturday 29 September 2007. The theatre was packed full and Ray delivered a captivating talk on the highlights of his career focussing on various groups of people he has been lucky enough to spend time with. All of the peoples were instantly recognisable from his television programs.
Sections were devoted to peoples including the Ivenk, Inuit, Hadza, Aboriginal People of Australia and indiginous peoples from the Amazon rain forest to name a few. Each section of the talk was devoted to one group of people and was rounded off with a photograph which he felt best captured the spirit of the people and his time with them.
Ray also spoke about the film crews he works with and the difficulties of making television in the extreme environments he visits.
The talk was engaging and informative and clearly showed Ray's charisma and ability to talk on the subject nearest to his heart. He spoke for 90 minutes without pause, even for a drink of water. The slides projected were technically excellent demonstrating his ability with a camera and an empathy with his subjects that leaps out at the audience.
After the talk Ray invited questions from the audience and spoke for a further 20 minutes answering questions such as what food do you find disgusting, the reply was brussel sprouts. During this Q&A session he spoke about the humility that he feels has been lost in the British culture as well as how he felt that we as a nation are kit obsessed.
The set also warrants a mention as it was visually appealing and added to the overall atmosphere of the evening. On a previous tour Ray delivered his talk from a lecturn. The set combined with his ability to roam about the stage made the evening much more dynamic.
In summation it was an excellent evening which I felt lucky to have attended. (Thanks to Neil and Deb for getting me a ticket!) I would whole heartedly recommend going to see Ray as it adds a different dimension to his television shows.

That’s interesting, BBS. Did RM expand on that at all (on both aspects raised)?
Best regards,
Paul.
