EXPLORING WOODLAND is a series of ‘best of’ guides from the Woodland Trust, featuring 100s of beautiful woods to visit in different regions and countries throughout Britain.
On 24 April the latest three titles covering The North West & The Lakes, East Anglia & North Thames and The North East & Yorkshire was published by Frances Lincoln, bringing the total number of titles available in the series to eight.
Each guide features stunning woods to visit in both private and public ownership making the guides all-inclusive. Illustrated with photographs and maps, each site entry captures the wood’s atmosphere, lists facilities available and suggests what to look out for on your visit, including wildlife you may encounter along the way.

The North West & The Lakes Exploring Woodland guide features woods stretching from Stoke-on-Trent through to the Lake District and on to the Scottish border. The woodland covered in this book ranges from oases of green in busy urban settings to dramatic countryside locations where trees meet the sea to spectacular wooded climbs in hidden corners of the Lake District.
The large area covered by the East Anglia & North Thames Exploring Woodland guide includes the large estates of Sandringham Country Park at over 600 acres and Hatfield Forest at 562 acres whilst also providing information on smaller pockets of woodland from north of the M25 through East Anglia.
The North East & Yorkshire Exploring Woodland guide includes over 100 woods. These include those close to the heart of Sheffield, Leeds and Bradford that have endured mainly because they had some economic association with the city industries to more rural woods farther north where woodland lines deep cut gorges that descend to explosive torrents of water.
Every wood was visited by an independent researcher to ensure information is up-to-date and those included are amongst the very best.
“These books are designed for people who not only want to explore and enjoy local woods but provides inspiration to venture further afield,” says series editor, Graham Blight. “As well as the best Woodland Trust sites, you’ll discover small, hidden away gems as well as large, high-energy forests managed by the Forestry Commission plus great days out with the National Trust and wildlife trusts.
“Trees and woods are crucial to life on our planet but, as these guides show, they are also great places of tranquillity, have the ability to inspire and refresh our souls. These guides may be pocket-sized but they pack in a fantastic variety of days out.”
As well as being available from high street bookshops, all titles can be purchased from the Woodland Trust at www.wt-store at a special online price of £6.99 (+p&p) each and a set of eight costing £47.50 (+p&p).
