With the liner fleece jacket zipped in it is great for winter, with warmth and protection from the wind and rain. When unzipped the outer jacket is a perfect summer rainy day coat, with the fleece used as a cooler lightweight jacket. There are poppers in the sleeves and at the neck to secure the inner jacket, something we only found out after we got really fed up of the sleeves coming out each time the jacket was taken off! The reflective thread running around the coat is a great added safety feature when walking in the dark. The hood goes far enough over to easily protect from the rain, but still giving good visibility, there are draw strings for windier days and a nice Velcro chin strap to secure the hood in place and protect the neck. The hood also rolls up and tucks away neatly beneath poppers. The cuffs are half elastic, with a Velcro strap to make a snug fit and there is a waist draw cord to produce a snug fit.

My son loves this coat especially with the hidden chest pocket, for his treasure! The only drawback, which unfortunately is quite a huge one for me is that it is hand wash only. I appreciate that it is needed so as to keep its waterproof coating but I think I would rather spray it down after each wash. What mother these days buys hand wash only clothes? I suppose if you are to choose just a few hand wash only items this could be one of them as I do think it is an excellent coat. But for me with a 5 year old who loves climbing, scrambling about and splashing in mud I don’t know how often I will be cleaning this coat, I’m far too lazy, but I suppose the dirt makes him look as though he has keelasimpsonjkt.jpghad a lot of adventures!

The coat has weathered a few embers settling on it, which is good news. It would not survive direct heat or larger embers sitting on the fabric, but for everyday use around the fire the coat performs very well, especially considering that it is a man-made fabric which is notorious for melt-ability!

Conclusion
Overall I would give this coat 8/10 as it is well made and well priced. There are other options out there but few would give this type of value to performance ratio. It looses a couple of marks because of the hand wash only situation. But maybe I’m expecting too much for what is a technical children’s garment.

zebralight2thumb.jpgSuch is the lure of these shiny objects on the male psyche that a number of dedicated collectors’ forums exist, inhabited by the silhouetted forms of men squinting at light meters, bathed in the brilliant glow of their own personal supernovas, mumbling incoherently about Lux, Lumens and thermal runaway.

Fallkniven F1 knife (05.04.2007)
thumb_f11.JPG The F1 is a basic fixed blade knife with a 'drop-point' 3.5inch blade (made of VG 10 stainless steel) and a man-made (Thermorun) handle. Originally designed for use by Aircrew of the Swedish Defence Forces as a survival knife, as any survivor will tell you a 'survival-knife' is the one you have with you at the time, so the F1 is designed to be small & light enough to be carried at all times but robust enough to withstand the abuse it would encounter in a survival situation within the Arctic Circle...

Sabre 45 is probably the rucksack that others are marked against in the bushcraft market. I was very interested to see what all the hype was about and if the real thing lived up to it all!

thumb_Overview Bag.JPGI was intrigued by Spamel’s thread on the Snugpak Response Pak – or their other types of ‘grab-n-go’ bags - and what people carried in them. I’m a bit of a bag junkie, partly because of my work (military) and partly because of a quest to be able to carry the right equipment for the right job in practically any situation.  I guess the ‘Holy Grail’ is effectively a bag that you instinctively grab, without thinking about it, before you go off for an adventure.

BCB Crusader Mess TIn with Lid (05.07.2007)
thumb_crusadermesstin1.jpgThe mess tin is a solid stainless steel and relatively lightweight cooking vessel. It comes with a well fitting lid, which is a bonus compared with the old aluminium version which came without a lid. It saves precious fuel and makes your water (or whatever you are preparing in it) come to a boil significantly faster.
