Loch Chon by Chainsaw Comment (4)

Joined some of the guys last weekend for a wee sneaky overnighter, most of the guys had been there the Friday night but I couldn't make it so unfortunately I missed the rain...

The wee fella has been hounding me for weeks to have a camp out in hammocks and thankfully the guys didn't mind if I brought him along so it was chainsaw juniors first hammock night out, a bit of an adventure for him.

We got there just after lunchtime and after a wee trudge about trying

DD Hammock Karabiner Mod by Chainsaw Comment (3)

Well finally got round to mod'ing my 2008 DDHammock from Sandbags47s excellent group buy . My 2006 was already fitted out with karabiners but the 2008 was still waiting for the same treatment! I like krabs on a hammock to work as drip rings and during the day, if you unclip one end, reconnect it to the ridgeline at the other end, it give you loads more space under the tarp. I wanted to go from the one on

New DDhammock by Chainsaw Comment (0)

Just a couple of photos showing the difference between the 2006 hammock and the new 2008 version from Sandbags group buy.

The main differences are the mossie net is now finer (a lot finer) to keep out midges, there are new less stretchy tapes, you get a couple of bits of elastic instead of some 4mm cord and you also get 2 zips so you don't have to reach all the way over your head to unzip the net. Still no velcro to keep your sleep mat in place though but I suppose it'

On the left is a cheapy headlight from Aldi or Lidl or something, takes 3 AAA and I can't remember changing the batteries on it ever, there is 8 LEDs but it's not that powerful, enough for pottering about under the tarp

Chainsaws Charcloth Chenanigans (!) by Chainsaw Comment (1)

A poor alliteration but never mind!!

I started a thread on the firecraft forum asking about charloth and was directed to this excellent tutorial by tadpole and also this one by maver. Both are really all you'll ever need.

I was musing about starting fires and the path from spark to ember

A newbies sharp stuff by Chainsaw Comment (2)

Hi All,

Thought I'd throw this up for information. This is a list of my sharp stuff, nothing seriously expensive (well yet...) but most of it is pretty serviceable.

Rainy day at Chainsaw Heights by Chainsaw Comment (1)

In fact it was larruping down all day, forecast from the BCUK link was Moderate/Heavy/Heavy/Torrential/Moderate! Plan was to go out for a walk or a cycle but I just wasn't in the mood for a soaking, somedays it makes no difference, others, I can't be bothered. Must be getting soft!! Also, I like taking my camera with me but it would have had to stay in the bag.

She who must be obeyed was planning on cooking up a special meal tonight to she didn't mind if I disappeared into the garden for the day. I popped the garage door up, hung a tarp to give me some more dry space and pulled up a chair. I had a couple of bushcraft

Cheapskate Crusader Cup Holder by Chainsaw Comment (0)

Hi All,

I was watching this thread on the forums and someone mentioned a hanger for the crusader cup. There was then another link to someone making one in the field which was really cool so I thought I'd figure out how to make a slightly more permanent one. You can buy these fellas on Ebay for a couple of quid but I've got a tight scotsman stereotype to live

First outing, job done! by Chainsaw Comment (1)

Well, I did it, on Saturday evening I headed out to location 2 as per my previous blog entry. I left the house a little late, about 20:30 and it took me an hour to walk in so by the time I finished setting up it was a bit dark, a bit of poor planning on my part.

One thing that did become apparent was that for anything longer than an overnighter, I'll need a bigger rucksack. Here's what I took with me;

First outing by Chainsaw Comment (2)

Hi all again, I was going to do a wee bit on my kit but I've instead decided I have enough to get out and have an overnighter. Not done a great deal of recce for this one but I may nip out on my bike tomorrow morning and have a poke about. Looks like one of the ones below;

Location 1 may not be so good, it's nice reasonably dense
