Introducing a Brother to Bushcraft by Nightwalker

Today I got the chance to introduce my younger brother to Bushcraft, at nearly seven I thought it was time for him to venture into the woods and learn a few things.

Initially it did confirm my thoughts; that children these days dont visit woods or nature nearly enough. He thought Woodlands was going to be the 'Woodlands adventure park'!

Anyway, it was a wet, winters day inour local woods, that didnt stop us! We still setup camp as I promissed, tarp, hammock and made Tea, Soup & later Bannock.

It rained most of the time, but Joe soon found the hammock a comfy retreat, whilst I lay beside the fire slow cooking the bannock for nearly an hour on mostly embers. It was the beast bannock I've made and we loved it. Played it completely by eye;

  • Self-Raising Flour
  • Water
  • Pinch or two of salt
  • Raisins
  • Honey

Hansome!

Joe was already excited to spend the night out in the wild, but I explained we'll leave that for when's he grown up a little. I showed him how to build a fire, how to use the firesteel and many other things. He's a very energetic child and unfortunatly dosent listen or take on board a lot of the things that are said, but I understand and expect to repeat the same techniques and knowledge to him in the future, but hey start'em young I say! Inspire them with new experiences and teach them with skills and knowledge they wont pickup from today's mainstream world. He enjoyed it thats the main thing.
