I spent Saturday specifically on a special kind of tracking mission. To track down a couple of local landowners to seek permission to use two local woods that I've wandered through, but never spent any time in.
After a bit of detective work, I ended up in front of a typical manor house (sculptured garden, lake, the whole works). I introduced myself and explained that I wanted to ask permission to track and watch the wildlife. I didn't mention Bushcraft. I thought that this wouldtake some explaining. It might be better explained at a later date.
He thought the idea was "Splendid" but only after the pheasant rearing season had finished. At least I was in!
The second land owner wasn't that accommodating at first. "If I gave you permission, I'd have to give everyone else permission. That's the problem. Everyone seems to think they have the right to go where they want," he said. I replied that this was the reason I was asking permission. I wouldn't just walk onto someone else's property. I agreed that some people don't respect the countryside, but I assured him that I did.
I again explained that I was interested in the wildlife and I convinced him that I would let him know if I saw anything untoward. This phrase has helped gain access (especially at night) to other woodland and seemed to sway the old fella, even if he did say "Okay. Now and again," although he didn't specify when now and again actually was.
I can sympathise with landowners, especially if they've had bad experiences. For me, I always feel better knowing I have permission to go in the woods. Gaining the landowners confidence over a period of time (and dropping in a bottle now and again) will help develop the relationship. It will only be a matter of time before they allow more Bushcraft type activity.
