A newbies sharp stuff by Chainsaw

Hi All,

Thought I'd throw this up for information. This is a list of my sharp stuff, nothing seriously expensive (well yet...) but most of it is pretty serviceable.

Starting at bottom left;

Frosts Mora Clipper - Amazingly good knife for under a tenner. The handle is good, grippier and more comfortable than the 740 solid plastic version and this one only cost 50p more. I also plumped for the stainless rather than the high carbon as it should cut dowwn on the maintenance required. Comes with plastic sheath as standard but some cracking leather ones available. The plastic sheath isn't too bad the knife clicks in nicely bit I probably wouldn't jump around with it dangling upside down!

Above this is a

Winchester.. erm thingy - I have had this for 2 0r 3 years for general camping and knifey things but this has been pretty much replaced by my Clipper. It blunts reasonably quickly but is pretty handy for batoning. Nice flat scandy grind on the blade with a secondary bevel (not too up on the grind types but I think this is correct) I think you can buy these for less than a fiver on Ebay but frankly I wouldn't!

Going over the top is the first of my many Gerbers;

Legend 800 - I love this tool, usual bunch of blades, files, scissors, bottle openers etc but also comes with a RemGrit saw, and super touch carbide cutters in the plier jaws.

To the right of this is my axe, another Gerber, a Gator combo axe a fair old size, about 15" and it comes with a saw which lives in the handle, a bit gimmicky but again it's something I picked up a while back. Not the sharpest of axes probably as I have no idea how to sharpen it. It looks very similar to the fiskars on in the review section but significantly shorter!

In the middle a selection of little multitools, a Leatherman micra, now replaced with my Gerber Shortcut and my SAK. I have no idea what model the SAK is, I've had it for about 10 years I think but it comes with a AAA maglite and a little compass/ruler/magnifier thingy, if anyone knows I'd be delighted to find out. I carry my Gerber Shortcut with me every day.

Doh! missed one, my gerber (surprise, surprise!) Fred Carter Utility Folder. I like this knife a lot, pretty sharp and very handy. The reason that I have so much gerber kit is that with my work I usually manage to score a trip the US once or twice a year usually to Portland, Oregon. The Gerber factory is about 5 miles from our facility there and a lot of the stores carry Gerber and usually at pretty good prices (no sales tax in Oregon) Whenever I get over I usually pick something up, sort of like a souvenir! The dollar to pound pricing and the sales they have are just too tempting for a man to bear!

There's about to be a new addition to the pointy family, I just splashed out on an F1 from Heinnie, I originally went for a DC4 sharpening stone but you know how these things escalate, I have almost bought one about 3 times but managed to resist but not this time! I got the zytel sheath as it was a little cheaper and I hope to make or buy a leather one at some point so no point in paying extra for a leather one and throwing it away.

Willpower of a gnat!

Cheers,

Alan
