| Settling In by Old Skool Scout | ||
I'm beginning to have the feeling I'm settling down now. After I wrote my blog, yesterday morning I spent some time at my camp. First thing I did was making it waterproof. Apparantly I got the angle wrong last night. However, that got me about 10 liters of fresh water! A good thing to have when surrounded only by seawater.
I then collected a big bunch of birchbark and twigs. Firemaking is going really fast now. I can make a fire now, big enough to make tea on, in less then fiveminutes.
After I did the dishes and washed my now quite dirty scoutshirt I spotted a red squirrel. Apparantly they are very common in Sweden, while most definitly not in Belgium or the UK where the grey one is abundant.
I then used my hammock for what it is renowed fo: napping!
Then I went out to look for some wood to make a spoon. I had a list of trees of which to wood was very good for carving. At the area I was camping there wasn't any of the really good one to be found however. Since my knowledge of trees isn't that good yet I'm gonna follow I special trail they made on this island in the early afternoon. Chopping trees is allowed here, since the scouts have problems keeping all the meadows open. It is even promoted! I did however find a good tree to make a walking stick with: ash. I worked on it so it can also be used as a flag pole and a stick to dig up (edible) roots with (gravkäpp in Swedish). I will add some marks soon as in: half a meter, a meter.
I then went to Storgårn and collected to package I had ordered. I ordered a crooked knife from the very good Swedish website: www.slojd-detaljer.se. It is full with good handicraft material and tools, not so expensive and they ship worldwide.
After a coffee break with the Program staff I went back to camp and prepared supper.
On the way back to Program I again looked for wood I could use for carving.
I also pluck some flowers for the Program staff. They have a "Flower of the Day". I plucked two very similar ones and let them look up which they were. Off course they got them correct! Only the best scouts may work at Program :-)
While they were looking up the flowers i finished my "eldpåse". A member of Program staff suggested a good way to keep it closed.
At 21h we went to the dining hall for some "ficka" or evening snack. They had prepared pizza!
I returned at camp at 22:45. I prepared to porridge for the next morning and crawled into the much less warmer sleeping bag I had borrowed. I slept like a baby!
When I woke up the next morning I had the porridge and coffee ready in less then 15 minutes.
On the way back to Program I collected loads of material for my "Eldpåse" (=firebag). I made my own Maya sticks, collected loads of resin and juniper bark. I had already collected birch bark earlier.
I also found a tree that was really suitable to make some birch bark baskets with! I cut out a really nice piece; without off course, damaging the tree (never cut to the green part!)
So now it's of for the forest ... to find some suitable wood for carving a spoon!
