Borage forage - fields of borage in Wootton by Jodie

We found fields of blueish purple plants while we were out this weekend and my friend (who grew up knewing all the wild flowers) was convinced she knew it but couldn't put a name to it.  So I picked one - there were fields full of them so I don't feel too guilty - and we checked it at home in her ye olde flower book.

The book helpfully divides flowers by colour so a bit of browsing in the blue section brought up borage - very pretty.  We didn't eat it though, maybenext time.

Useful little book though - Flowers, by Janet Harvey Kelman from 1913!  Fortunately the flowers don't seem to have changed much.  Although it's a charming book and describes the appearance very well it doesn't give any information on uses or edibility of the plants.

It was nice to be out in the country collecting (admittedly just the one) wild plant and then identifying it.  We also got Saturday's guardian which had a small section on foraging at the back of the supplement on picking your own fruit.

Hoping we get back to London OK cos of the flooding!

Crickey, flip! You're a woman, Jo. And there was me thinking you were just a really nice bloke smilies/cheesy.gif I had no idea. So much for my powers of perception smilies/grin.gif

Great posts from you, as always.

Best regards,
Paul.

Haha - I am indeed female smilies/smiley.gif
Unfortunately I'm also a law breaker as picking even one borage plant without permission is not allowed - I'm not quite sure how many laws I might have broken. Definitely I have broken the one about asking for the landowner's permission but for all I know I might have been interfering with wild plants. There was oodles of borage though so I don't think anyone would mind - then again if I pinched a few thousand from the Bank of England they mightn't look so kindly on me if I pointed out that there were millions more pounds in the vault I pinched from.

Ooops.

It was the avatar, Jo. And a jolly nice one too. Good to see a happy face.

Don’t worry about the illegal harvest, I’m not gonna split on you for that. I think you have a balanced attitude – no one is going to notice that a little has gone missing from their precious ‘crop’.

Good luck,
Paul.

Jodie,
You're not committing any offences. Borage isn't on the schedule of protected plants and you didn't uproot the plant. You only commit theft if you sell what you pick. Even trespass isn't an offence (in England and Wales) but indeed you should have asked permission smilies/wink.gif

Actually, I did uproot the plant smilies/cool.gif
It came away very, very easily because the ground was so sodden - it just fell out into my hand smilies/smiley.gif
